Aquabacs' Cadlights Artisan 50 Azooxanthellae Tank build

You really need to pick up some nutramar ova, the protein level is much much higher.
Nice crinoid pictures.

Thanks! I have to remember to pick some up next time at Greenwich Aquaria.

That reminds me, I need to give Greg a call, I think he has something in for me :)

Nice pics Mike! I need to try some of that ova too. I haven't found it locally will probably order it from Marine Depot.

I forgot to mention that earlier I made some headway with my co-op board. They will allow me to get a small portable generator. They will allow me to use it to recharge my battery back up system but I can not use it to power my system. So what I am looking at purchasing is a Xantrex PowerHub 1800 and a portable Yamaha generator. Combined this will be able to power my complete system with the addition of a chiller.

Thanks! My wife ordered me a Tamron 90mm lens for my camera so hopefully you will see better pictures in the future :)

Ask your local shop to order it in for you. I can not see paying the fees to have frozen food shipped in from an online dealer.

For how long???

I'm looking to get a battery backup system for my tank but don't know how to tell which battery backup can last the longest and power the most things.

For selecting a system you eed to figure out how much wattage you need to support and work from there. If you can get a generator without any issues, then pick one up. If you live in an appartment, condo, or co-op then battery back up is your best bet. This is the specs on the battery back up unit I am looking at purchasing:

price listed is for the unit only. You have to purchase the batteries seperately.

Marty, I was able to run most of the system continously while the power was off. To be honest, I actually ran the system without the skimmer on for a period of time to reduce power consumption from my battery back up. During this time I also did multiple water changes. The new battery back up system I am looking into purchasing (link is listed above) will be able to sustain my system for a longer period of time. The good thing is that the power outage happened this time of year and not during the summer. The other item that I am looking to purchase is a small, energy efficient, low gph, chiller. I have one model that I am looking at now that fits that spec.

As for the items in my aquarium. I observe the behavior of the animals in the aquarium with the power outage. What was interesting is that all my crinoids, which normally are stationary in the aquarium (once they find their perfect feeding spot) moved. They all moved to the top of my aquarium and remained open. I watched them extremely close to see if there was some type of spawning that was going to occur, but nothing visibly seen.

Maybe because the skimmer was off, they came out more because there was more food in the water column? Or maybe less food because you were changing out so much water?

Also, this is a completely random question, but, how do you turn on spell check?

I'm still new to the hobby and haven't seen may set-ups lilke your. It's intriguing and tempting.

I assume this isn't the sort of set-up(biotope) and livestock recommended for a first time reefer?

Is the particulate feeding the main issue?
Do you feed the tank in general, or "bucket" feed each colony daily?

HOW ABOUT A NEW FTS!!

]Thanks

Thank you very much.

Would I recommend doing a full non-photosynthetic aquarium to a first time reefer? It all depends on a persons skill set. If a person has never had a reef aquarium or is very new to reef keeping...this might not be their first venture that they might want to travel. Time and dedication is needed. It is not just the feeding or knowing what to feed, it is the total care of the aquarium.

For bucket feeding is only used until a coral colony that was weak/underfed has enough strength to open all of it's polyps completely and can feed on it's own. For feeding the tank in genaeral I use a autofeeder to feed 24/7 dry mix of Fauna Marin foods, everything else frozen & liquid is fed manually.

A new full tank shot should be available in a week or so. I have been moving a few corals around and I am not personally satisfied with the position/orientation of some of the corals.
