AquaC CLUB!

That is a lot of pump for the 120, but there is no reason not to try it. I'd install it with a ball or gate valve on the pump outlet so you can dial it down.

I think most people are using the Eheim 1260 for the EV-120 with success. The Eheim pumps are rated at a higher pressure than the Mag pumps. So, they work much better in this application.

Now that you have said that the 1260 works great with the EV120 because it is pressure rated, I took a look at the 1260.

I'm slightly put off by the $119 price at Premium Aquatics.

I'm horrified by the $45 price of the impeller, however! :(

What makes one pump pressure rated while another one is not? The impeller looks quite similar to that of the Mag 7 that I own, except it has 6 blades instead of 3. I guess I was expecting a different type of pump drive for a "pressure rated" pump.

To answer my own question and to foster some discussion, my experience with pressure ratings is that the flow of the pump is rated at a certain pressure. So if you increase pressure past that point, flow will decrease.

The flow of the water through the injector will cause some pressure before the injector. If you have so much flow through the injector that you have to back off the pump flow, as I do, I would think that switching to a different, higher pressure rated pump would not help.

But then again, maybe there is just some pump voodoo that just can't be explained by a pressure/flow graph.

i have a 1262 at 900 gph, a few more gph than a 1260 at 635 gph.

Oh, and Captain Coral, I have not yet purchased that air valve or a gate valve for my pump outlet. I think that the air valve would make a big difference in controlling the skimmate output. Buy it and let me know!

Yeah, it's been in the back of my mind for a couple years to try a cheap gate valve from Menards or somewhere to see what would happen. Since it's finally the weekend and I actually have both sat and sun off, I have a burning desire to try one. I'll order the McMaster-Carr one as well and let everyone know of the results. I need an excuse to take some new pics anyway. But I hope the McMaster one works out, because the cheap hardware store one would only be a temporary fix because salt creep would probably get in there and rust out the metal screw.

For anyone interested in using a gate valve on their pump rather than a ball valve (for much more precise dialing), I have ordered from here a few times. They also have some cool unions.

I actually managed to find a 3/4" gate valve at the local fish store today for $18! That blew me away.

Yeah, it is only a $9 valve, but I didn't have to pay shipping and it is in my hand as we speak. The valve takes about 4 turns to go from fully open to fully shut, so it has some good fine control.

So I picked uped a EV-1000 about a month ago. I put it in using my Blueline HD55 pump. This was not big enough. So about two months ago I upgrade to a Reefflo Sequence 4200.

My problem is I can not get a steady production of foam through the reaction chamber or or riser tube. It seem to do best with both air valves open all the way. I also have a breather on my drian line, as per Aqua-C service. The bubbles also seem to start out small 1-2mm they towards the top large like boiling water.

My questions are does anyone have a similar setup?

What type of setting do you use for water level, and for air valves? Any help would be great.

Thanks Tim

where is your water level at in the riser tube when you have the pump running but with the air valve completly closed?

is your setup in sump or out? if in, is water level constant, as in the skimmer in the sump section where baffles keep water level constant?

is your gate valve above water level, at water level, or under water?

calling all ev1000 users :)

I looked quick and found this

I don't know the first thing about ev1000s, but I do know head pressure is crucial with AquaC skimmers. The above link shows that the max head pressure of your pump is only 12ft. Having to open the air valves all the way is likely evidence of the lack of pressure on the injector. FWIW, when I ran my ev400, I used a 20' head pump, and it worked very well.

The result was this

Ok, I just looked around some more for you Timmye.

I looked for specs at the AquaC site for the ev1000 and saw nothing, so I hopped over to Marine Depot to see what was recommended for the ev1000. Apparently the Iwaki 55rlt is recommended for the ev400, so it should be under driving the ev1000. They recommend the 70 rlt for the ev1000. It has 1500 GPH and 31.8 feet max head.
The bluline HD 70 rates at 1750@0head with max head of 39 ft.
Now, which pump to recommend, I couldn't say. If I were to buy a ev1000, I'd probably be choosing between the HD70 and HD100 blueline/panworld pumps. The HD100 has 1900 GPH@0head and a whopping 45' of head pressure. Awfully tempting, but the HD70 might do fine. Since the pumps use 1" outlets, I'd also order from AquaC the GCarroll injector.

Speaking of, someone ring Greg's doorbell, he missed his cue. :D

a correction for my previous post...I ran the ev400 with a genx mak4 with 1100gph and 22' head.

I think I need some help. i'm running ev-400 in sump with mag 24. The location where skimmer sit is where the water drain from the main tank. I notice that skimmer skimed drier and drier every day. I checked everything and found that the air valve was clogged so I cleaned it and 3 days later it clogged again, cleaned it and 3-4 days later it clogged again. I thought it could be the splash that come from the hose so I added the PVC pipe to raise the height of the air valve like in the picture but it still getting clogged (white looking dry stuff I assume it's salt) after 3 days so I connected a 1" flex hose to the air valve so now it's out of the sump but it's still clog again. now i don't know what to do except cleanning the air valve every 3 days which is not what I want to do. Anyone have the similar problem? How should I fix it?

Howdy empire. :) I really love my ev400, and when I get back into sps corals after I move out of this apartment, I'm going to hook it back up. It does seem odd to have the air valve clogging so quickly. When mine clogged, it seemed worse than just salt creep, more like calcium build up. It would take a vinegar bath to unclog it. It seems to defy all logic that even with your extension it's still clogging. I'd try leaving the valve on the mixing box and adding an extension to that, maybe even running it further away from the tank.

This is what I did to get fresh air to the skimmer from outside for ph control and to keep it skimming because I smoke cigarettes. A side benefit is it isn't clogging anymore. Somewhere in the club pages are pics of similar air valve mods.

I have this setup out of sump, and the gate valve is above the water level in the sump. As far as water level is with air valves closed, in the reaction chamber that dpendes on the how open/closed the gate valve is.

Thanks Captaincoral. I decided to cover the sump with glass plate today to see if there is any different. I won't know it until 3 days later. And I also thought of that clog could be calcium too because its' kinna hard to get it out. The first time I found out that it was clogged I had to soak it with vinegar. Later I used toothpick and rinse it with water. I will extend the pipe further too to see if it helps.

Captain! I have both hard and soft plumbing.

I am at about the one month mark on my ev 180. AFter a frustrating first week, its been pumping it out ever since.

Ive considered some of the upgrades in here, Id like to get an Eheim pump, just cause I love em, but I feel no need to.

Im running a mag7, with the air wide open, the gate closed about a turn and half. Water level it exactly at the top of the box. Foam is breaking almost at the top of the tower. I am also draining into a 5 gal bucket.

Bubbles are ok, Id like em a wee bit smaller though.

natty, as long as you're happy, and the tank isn't underskimmed, it's all good.
There is only so far you can push the ev180 anyway. Even with my foam tower extended, the gate removed, and a mag 12 on it, I can't get the uber fine bubbles or the kind of dry foam I was getting with the ev400 with the mak4 pump. It's keeping my tank clean though so I'm content. If I skimmed it any harder, my softies would probably quit growing.
:spin2:
