AquaC CLUB!

i guess you have the air valve open a bit much

what pump do you have
apprx how open is the gate valve

ooooo Okinawa.....cool, I love those japaneese tanks. :) Have you visited any of the locals tanks since you've been there?

I'm wondering if AquaC's baffles arnt' as effective with the older models. No matter, a filter sock works wonders for the micro bubbles.

Here is a shot of the 1/2" gate valve I'm experimenting with in place of the ball valve. I just went to order the McMaster-Carr valve, but saw the 24.71 price tag and got scared off for the time being. I'd like to find out if it closes all the way and if there are any metal parts on the inside before I buy it. Anyone have any guesses regarding that? I guess I'll e-mail them and hope for a response. Anyway, in the mean time I'll tinker with this one and let you all know in a few days what I think of it. I took off the drain hose for the pic.

BTW, it's still hooked up to the 3/4 spa flex hose which runs out of a window.

empire.....gosh, I can't remember now exactly. I've got it in the closet waiting for my return to sps corals. (I'll have to move all my tanks soon, as I'm looking to buy a house and don't want to rtn anything in the process) I'm running the above modified ev180 in the meantime because this tank is in my bedroom/office, and the mag12 I'm driving it with is silent (which the ev400 with mak4 is not) :)

I guess it depends on the bioload and how wet/dry one skims to fill a cup. I myself like to run so dry, that the collection cup has foam in it. FWIW, that pic above is only about 4 hrs of skim directly after a cleaning, but it ran a little on the wet side for an hour as well.

This is on my 180 with 6 green chromis 2 tomato clowns, 1 pacific blue tang, and one yellow tang. I keep them fat with rods food, ocean nutrition flakes and seaweed select algae sheets. I change 20 gal of water each weekend with reef crystals salt mix. I also have a 40 gal breeder aga fuge with macro algaes.

:)

Pelochas,
I am using a MAG 5 pump and the EV-90 does not have an air valve. I have the gate valve open about a quarter of the way to keep the water level about 3/4 inch below the cup. I also have the water level in the skimmer above the water level in my sump. Some people have said the gate valve needs to be above the sumpwater line as well but the manual just says the skimmer water level needs to be above the sump water level. I just set up my tank yesterday and am at work now so maybe it has worked itself out overnight. I will see when I get home. If not, I will take a pic.

CaptainCoral,
I have visited the local shops and the dry goods and equipment is ridiculously expensive; however, the livestock is relatively cheap. I just strap a tank on my back and head out to the ocean to gather all my goodies. It is actually a blast stocking the tank directly from the ocean and the diving here is incredible.

Thanks for everyone's help!

Well, that is a bummer, but keep trying. I can't imagine that with some hose clamped on tight and run far away wouldn't help. With mine run out the window, there are no clogging issues. No salt gets in, no buildup. :) Have you tried a filter sock on the tanks drain to reduce splashing?

Here is a current shot of my sump and tank. The tank is going through some changes, and is getting everything slowly from my 55 gal as its converted to a frag tank. The 180 was an sps tank that crashed last year due to neglect and an online gaming quake3 habit. I'm getting her back on track though and the parameters are right where they should be again and the pink and purple corallines are starting to overtake the green coralline that is growing in there as well.

magrath... do you mean that you keep the bubbles breaking point 3/4" below the cup? Well, I'm certainly jealous of your diving playground. :)

I think I worded that incorrectly. I have the water level inside the skimmer about 3/4 inch below the top of the inner chamber.

Four days into using my new/used EV_240, I am laughing at myself.

I've read most of this forum and as with most, I am guessing, I took no heed to the tips and warnings. LOL

I've got a 210 gallon tank with dual overflows. The pump is a Reeflo Barracuda and I have the 1.5" output that tees off to the 1" hose for the skimmer. The water bypasses the tee and tees again for the (2) 3/4" inputs for the tank.

To make a long story longer, I looked like a one man band while I adjusted the pump flow, the air valve and the output gate valve. I know you all said, "adjust slowly and wait, give it a breakin period, open the gate valve all the way, etc."

I closed the gate valve almost all the way and I couldn't seem to adjust the airvalve (until I capped the jg fitting). After following all your instructions I got it right after 3 days of dancing. My wife said I missed the whole weekend under the tank. LOL

Bottom line is it works like a dream now, so...

THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH!!!

i have to clean my cup every other day, or it will not pull as much gunk out. my skimmer will skim after an about hour when the cup has been cleaned.

calling all ev1000 users :)
Sorry, I don't check this thread as much as I ought to. I run my EV 1000 with my 1" EV400 injector. I could not get the skimmer to stop overflowing with the original EV1000 injector. By using the EV400 injector the bubble size was much smaller which I feel actually improved skimming. The pump I am using is a MAG 36.

After the cleaning yesterday morning, which included the build up tower, I haven't been able to get the foam to go past the bottom of the sticker. It has been almost 24 hrs. The bubbles seem to pop with no adherence. Could that be from cleaning the rising tower?

Thanks,
Michael

I have an EV-180 up for sale....$220 shipped. Please PM me if interested. I got a new larger tank so I now need a larger skimmer.

Laud.... Wiping out the foam tower and cleaning the cup shouldn't shut the skimmer down for more than 15 minutes, So I'm thinking it's something else. These are very sensitive to oils from food, hands, cig smoke, air fresheners, new plastic etc. What you're describing sounds to me like something like that. They'll appear to have a more violent bubble bursting going on lower in the tower.

I used a normal paper towel, so I know they have ink and other contaminants. It took a day and a half to get up again.

One other problem I am having is that when it does "get up" in the bubble tower, it runs perfectly for a good while, but sometime after that it kinda explodes up the tower and floods the overfill cup.

Should I keep the bubble level down in the rising chamber for an extended period of time until it does catch in and let it completely stabilize before the fine tuning?

Thanks again,
Michael

i use a paper towel too but dont have this problem, usually starts to skim in 15 to 30 minutes.

are you adjusting the air intake cause if it explodes and floods, you have open up the air intake that would cause this.

usually when i clean the skimmer, it leave it running. grab a old 5 gal salt buckets, pull off the cup, stick in it the bucket, grab a paper towel, clean the riser, throw dirty towel in bucket. wash the cup with plain old water, place cup back on skimmer. i dont mess around with air intake or gate valve adjustments cause its set right on the dial.

ever since i upgraded to a eheim 1262, i get 300% more skimmate. in three days, i have the three times the amount of skimmate. i havent clean the cup every other day cause i wanted to see and measure what i get per day. i am very impressed with the results of upgrading from a mag 5 to an eheim 1262. pics later today

Mine doesn't work for 24 hours or more everytime I put my hands in the tank. I have a window cracked right next to the skimmer so it receives fresh air, but it doesn't seem to matter. I used to have a problem when I got new air fresheners in the house, but I stopped doing that. There must be something in the air around here that makes this thing extremely inconsistent. Now that I think about it, I haven't had foam building in almost a week. It just kicks back in whenever it feels like it. Anyone else have this problem or a solution to it?
