AquaC CLUB!

Here is the method that works for me on the ev-120.

close air off all the way, gate valve all the way open. adjust pump flow until water level is a little above the box, 1/4 to 1/2" after it stabilizes (may take a half hour or so to stabilize)

gradually open air flow, small increments waiting 45 min to an hour between adjustments. water level will drop back down as airflow is opened. If you get to where airflow is wide open and still no foam production in the cup after 24 hrs, they start closing the gate valve in tiny increments.

If at some point of dialing back the gate valve you end up with water pushing well up into the neck then start over and give the skimmer more flow from the pump.

It's a pain but once you get the sweet spot set they work like a champ.

Update... It's working I think... it's foaming up tp the top of the neck and trying to go to the cup, air pipe is half way and gate wide open, so I think I'm going to leave it like that and see what happens. Question though, I have tiny bubbles on the bottom of the neck, big ones on the middle and very tiny ones on top, is it too dry or wet??

Thanks guys for the help, very much appreciated!

Give it a few days and see how it settles in. It's hard to be patient but that is the key factor to getting these skimmers dialed in just right.

I prefer to run a wetter skimmate, it helps to lessen the need for cleaning the neck of the skimmer but I also run a 1 gallon jug for a collection container so that makes doing so much easier, as apposed to emptying the cup daily.

If you're not using an external container shoot for dialing it in so that it fills the cup at least half full each week, give or take. This will of course vary with feeding and how often you clean the skimmer but it's something to aim for.

Hi all you Aqua C people= I just inherited a EV- 180. I am wondering if I am missing a piece as the collection cup fits on the rest of the unit loosely. Is there a "washer" or something else that makes this junction water proof?

Figured it out - came with the Rio pump- Overkill for my 40 cube - but what the heck- for free I will try it. Put gate valve and air valve full open - getting bubbles to 2-3 inches over the base - no foam yet ( 2 hours) . SO, it will take some trial and error to dial this skimmer in. The tank has been circulating without livestock for weeks because I had no working lights - so there may not be much protein to skim = no foam. Nice and quiet ...

welcome, give it time and let it do its thing. if you have any questions please let us know but the biggest thing is you have to give them time when you make adjustments

OK working good- Question - I am reading that the "in sump" setup has the gate valve above the water line - why? I would want to put something on the end ( PVC) to aim downwards back under the water level so it does not splash. What is a common thing to raise it 2-4 inches? If I use rock it will be noisy, so need something that will allow water to go through it and saturate without degrading it - maybe a good pod grower as well. Hmmm- thoughts....

I built a stand using e.g. crate and a few pic fittings to reduce splash and direct flow. Just make sure the pipe does not restrict flow or cause siphone

Can anyone tell if this normal during breaking period of an Aqua C Remora. Is been approximately 1 week and the skimmer is producing lots of micro bubbles and no skim mate. The skimmer has a Maxi jet 1200 for pump. I lifted the cup and look into the main body in the center where the bubbles are suppose to build up and where the neck of the cup goes was overflowing with bubbles and dripping into the output side in to the main tank. I know the bubbles are coming from that, but my question is what is causing to be an overflow of bubbles but yet, it doesnt produce any skim mate. I am hopeful it is just a breaking period. It is not new, but I heard that if you wash them thoroughly you will start the breaking period again. Please help.

Do you have a "pro" or regular model? Are you using a pre-skimmer box? Can you adjust the collection cup area further down so those bubbles get into the neck of the collection cup? Its been a long time since I had one of these.

OK - even without lifting the unit above the water level in the sump it is skimming reasonably well. I just raised it about 2.5 inches with four layers of plastic egg-crate tied together with a Zip tie. This put the bottom edge of the exit out of the skimmer at the same level as the water in the sump and I immediately had to readjust everything. So yeah - it worked. However, I decided to clean out the skimmer cup and I cant get the collection cup lid off. Arggg....

Edit: Well- I had to pull on the casket to get the lid off, the casket tore - I hope that wont effect the performance of the unit. What a pain....

It'll be fine. More prone to leaking skimate foam but should be fine. The gasket is just a piece of Epsom rubber like pond liner if you have pond supply place they will probably have a s rap you. An get to cut a new gasket for less than ordering a new one if the leaking gets to be a problem for you.

cool thanks. brand new break-in period to fine tune it I suppose. Since I have this on a 40 cube - it is way overkill anyhow.

Not all that much over kill. Have mine on a standard 55. Heavily stocked but wouldn't go much bigger tank wise with this model as primary filtration.

Hey Guys- I've read thru most to all of the 80+ pages of both threads- I'm at a loss here- I have the EV-120 and I'm powering it with a Rio 3100- I have it plumbed externally with about 6ft of feed hose and 4ft of flex return line- I installed a valve to control the flow from the pump- because of where I have to put it, I have 90 elbow coming right off of the gate valve- I'm having a really hard time dialing it in- I have it going about 2 weeks, had good foam once or twice and then it just dies- shortened the return hose so it wasn't submerged, still nothing- added the valve on the inline (I thought I was overdriving it) and still nothing (well not nothing, but no bubbles reaching the cup) I've tried almost every combo of air/return/input adjustment I can think of-

Could the 90 elbow on the gate valve be inhibiting the skimmer to this degree? My last resort is drill my sump, but I'd rather not take that risk unless I absolutely have to-

(Don't mind the tape on the 90 elbow- I even tried drilling a hole to eliminate the possibility of a syphon- that didn't work either)
