AquaC CLUB!

i raised my skimmer about 2 inches and now my water level in the neck is good and since last nite it had skimmed very well or as well as before.

i went looking for a ball valve with barb hose ends but could find one in hd or lowes. i even tried to get the bard ends with slip fitting to glue on a normal ball valve but couldnt even find that.

the water fall effect over my baffles is producing micropbubbles into the main tank. so the eheim definately going to be moved out or the flow seriously reduced. i had a moment of brain power and i came up that since it didnt fit horizontally, why dont i place it vertical like some skimmers have plummed in with the intake at the bottom . so thats is what im going to work with after posting this. will post pics later.

i moved the eheim back into the skimmer section of the sump. it kinda was very tight in here but it worked with pump now vertical instead of horizontal. it wasnt easy getting this done but i rather have it this way than the other way.

cup with skimmate when eheim pump on the return section

no more water falls!

skimming already but i lower the air intake more so that i would not get a wet skimmate or overflow of the cup. hoping for some good gunk in the morning

Ive got a piece of pvc with an elbow on my gate valve. It meets the water line exactly. No noise, bubbles.

Anyone gravity feed their v-180. I figure Ive got 900 gph running through my return line.

Why not gravity feed the skimmer, get rid of that loud mag pump!!

natty... Is your mag plumbed with hard pvc? Mine is dead silent with flex hose.

pelochas....The foam pics look great now, kudos to a good fix.

yesterday i check the cup to see the results. i had about 1/4 inch of wet skimmate. it look too watery, not dark. i took a pic which i will upload after work.

i clean the cup and bump open a tiny bit on the air flow. the eheim 1262 is flowing wide open, i have not installed a ball valve or gate valve. going to see the results after work and take a pic of that also.

if i bump open any tiny bit more on the air valve, it will skim crzy for a bit and foam will fill the cup then go stable for 10-20 minutes then its justs overflows with water.

if i can not get the skimmate im looking for will the one inch injector or a valve to control the flow be better choice?

btw, what the difference on the gate and ball valve?

and this is something that has been knocking my head but after searching and looking for a picture of an actual ev-150 to see the difference to the ev-180, i didnt realize but all this time i thought i bought from ebay a ev-150. it sure doesnt look like an ev-150 cause from i have seen, the gate valve is not at the bottom, mine is at the near top corner and not on the side or smaller side, my gate valve is on the wider side. so please tell me or show what an ev-150 really looks like. im sure i bought a used ev-150 from ebay but actually is a ev-180

thx

Pelochas,

The gate valve on my EV-150 is on the small side. I think the newer models (120, 180, etc) have the valve on the long side. My gate valve is probably 1/2 up (or down) the small side. If it is an EV-150, then you want to set the water level to be even with the black "shelf" piece below the riser. If it is an EV-180, you want to set the water level to be about even with the top of the black mixing box where it meets the clear riser. See this link, this is the EV-180:

I have the EV-180 and from your pic it doesn't look like my 180.
The riser and collection cup are the same size on the 180.
It looks like your riser is smaller then the collection cup.

I have pics of mine in my gallery.

That picture was from AquaC's website on the EV-180 page.

Yeah even that one doesn't look like his
The riser on your link is also the same size as the collection cup on top.

pelochas pic looks like it has a 1/2" difference between the riser and collection cup.

Oh, I see what you are talking about. Strange, my EV-150 has the same size riser as collection cup. I've never seen one where they aren't the same diameter.

Here's what my EV-150 looks like. I guess it does have a little difference between the two sizes, but not as much as pelochas'. I would say his is either an EV-120, or possibly the old EV-90?? I don't know that I've ever seen a picture of the EV-90.

Need to clean off some salt creep eh? I think these older models were notorious for this problem.

And here's what the body looks like with the gate valve in the picture (first setup, nice and clean):

I wonder if a tube on the lid like that would help my problem. I tend to get foam piling up on the lid, and it tends to block the rest of the foam from coming up the tube.

Oh, and Captain Coral, I have not yet purchased that air valve or a gate valve for my pump outlet. I think that the air valve would make a big difference in controlling the skimmate output. Buy it and let me know!

And please don't slow down the frequency of your posts. :) Posted ideas lead to more ideas!

well i need to take some measurements.

the only thing im sure of is the gate valve is on the wider long section and its on the top near corner and not on the short side at the near bottom

the only measument difference in the 180 and 120

ev-120
• Height: 18"
• Footprint: 8.5" x 4.75"
• 4" x 6" OD foam tower

ev-180
• Height: 20"
• Footprint: 9" x 5.75"
• 5" x 6" OD foam tower

Pelochas,

Sounds to me like you have the EV-120. What does your air intake look like? The older models are grey, like mine. And, the newer versions have a blue knob on them I think.

yeah it looks to me likes its an ev-120. the obvious indicator was the od foam tower is smaller than the cup. its not the same width as the cup.

oh well, its rated for my tank size. i got it from ebay with a oceanic sump, overflow box, and two mag 5 pumps for $200 on ebay about 2 years ago so no beef. the price is fair.

and it has the blue knob.

My Mag 7's impeller got so gummed up with calcium over the past couple months that it literally seized. The ceramic shaft is wedged solid in the magnet. No way to get it out.

So I threw in a spare Mag 5 impeller that I had laying around. I have a 1" injector and 1" tubing from the pump to the injector. After 3 days, I barely have 1/8" of dark, nasty skimmate in the cup.

So somewhere between a Mag 5 and a Mag 7 is my happy space. I just wish I could find it. :( I really need to order a gate valve for the pump. The ball valve is just too hard to adjust. I wish you could find gate valves locally.
