1260 pump is ordered! Thank to you guys! LOL
GOOD MOVE!:bum:

I cannot remember. It looks to me to be foaming very dry, and likely missed my 3 day cleaning. It was kicking major tail like that, and I don't think I'm getting much more out with the ev400. I just have a larger "window of safety" since the upgrade, for when things die off or after a red bugs treatment, etc.

I'm only upgrading the pump on it because my softie/clown tank cannot take the heat of the mag. I'm switching the mag5 return to a Eheim 1260. (actually the whole sump, fuge, skimmer, etc. is being replaced hopefully tomorrow)

I am aware that the mag's are inferior to many other pumps in many regards, but I had one sitting in the closet anyway so I used it. (it replaced a mag7)
As shown, the gate had to be removed from the exit to keep the water height from going too high despite the length of tubing feeding the skimmer. It's not your best choice of pump for heat or vibration issues, but there's plenty of pressure to run the ev180. In fact, I had that rock on the lid to keep foam from escaping. ;)
When set that dry, it could clog up the cup drain elbow in under a week.

was curious the comparison, as that is about what i had in 1 day of dry on mine with the eheim.

DISCLAIMER: please don't run the input hose without clamp.. per aqua c manual, if run without a clamp, its not if, but when it will come off.

actually, i think they state that just in the chance so they don't get sued.
at any rate, i put stainless steel on the ones not in water contact and bought the 1" plastic clamps from drfosterandsmith for the ones in contact with water.

Well, nevermind asking about bioloads, feeding habits, etc.....sheesh.
Let's cut to the pump fanboy chase right now. There is only pressure, volume, and the velocity of water movement that makes these skimmers go. However you want to accomplish this be it gravity, sharing plumbing lines of powerfull return pumps, dedicated pumps, proper pressure equals proper results. To ask me how long an amount collected without asking for the afore mentioned information and actually knowing how dry/dark it really is, is to base a desicion on only some of the facts. In fact pic one is after a cleaning and the last pic is after some foam, and you don't even know how much is in the collection jar, because it isn't showing. :eek2:

It is a good Idea to use hose clamps yes. :D Deffinately not recomended to have it set up like in those pics. hehe It was snug enough though. I did try it for kicks without clamps for a minute when I put the mak4 pump on, but it leaked forceably at the injector. You better bet it's clamped now. :D

well, in the top pic, i did see the collection jug...

and yes, you can call me fanboy if you like, it has won me over after using the other pumps with little to no success.
and i'd have to say has to be something besides the pressure and gph, since the sen 900 puts more out in both regards.
the qo outputs more when its wide open, but doesn' t handle the skimmer well.
And yes, you are correct bioload does make a lot of difference as well as any dosing and what being fed/how often.
as does how its plumbed in and location of the skimmer pump input.
I've gotta start taking pics when before doing changes, and making notes to what the changes are.

I'm not saying the mags can't work, obviously people have had success with them. But also have had many not so happy campers as well.
I wish the eheim were cheaper. no question about that. i'd had used the external iwaki had been feasible, but I'm not replacing another end to my sump tank, considering its tempered glass.

i guess only true test would make up some batches of saltmix, aging it and never being fed or any livestock touching the water.

i've read a lot of people comparing their ev's to asm's that the asm pulled much more.. but when using set up the way it is, on mine, the ev is pulling that much more than the asm.
THis was my first eheim, it won't be the last.. i have definately been converted to a fan of theirs with the experience from this one. Had i based my thoughts of the Ev on the other pumps, i'd have hated it too.
That is one advantage the needlewheel skimmers have to others, is the pump is the one chosen by the manufacturer of the skimmer.

If I may change the subject slightly for a moment...I have an EV240 which is still waiting for me to get the new tank set up. I finally did a real test fit in my sump under my stand, and...eek, it doesn't fit! Actually, it would fit fine, but for me to get the Mag18 pump I bought in there with it, I have to put the skimmer raised up on top of the Mag18...and when I do that, I don't have enough room to get the collection cup on and off. Stand space is fairly precious right now, so I'm not too pleased that I will need to run the pump externally, but if I do that...has anyone actually run the Mag18 as an external pump with this skimmer? The manufacturer says it can be either internal or external, but for some reason Marine Depot says internal only. I really don't want to go and buy an Iwaki or Panworld if I can help it...they cost more and take up more space (not sure about the difference in noise).

Any feedback is welcome...

Well, with a panworld or iwaki your skimmer will perform much better.
If you setup the mag18 externally, there might be a risk of the seals failing and then flooding (it happened to me with a mag7)
If you can install it internally and put the skimmer on top of it, it will be fine, but servicing the pump will be a PITA.

bureau, you couldn't redo a baffle to where it would fit, towards surface of the water?
just protein skimmer basics, not necessarily a specific one.
it' should work under it, maybe even better with the airbubbles being kept at bay.

capt, i hope i didn't come off as rude, i do appreciate and like to share with seeing how to work them. and no way to really compare a setup, unless only changing 1 element at a time.
like me comparing the asm to the ev, was fair, since pump put in same place, and such. but then that is with a grain of salt, cause everytime you change any plumbing it effects them
peace.
I did have the asm running at the same time though for a while. ev with qo pump next to the sedra did nothing, put in the chamber behind it with the sen hardly anything. to fit the sen in the first compartment i had to remove the asm.
it worked but not great.
eheim in its place kicked tail. This morning, sadly i had to put the eheim back into the 2nd compartment along with the ev.. since some chaeto got sucked into my return pump plumbing and slowing the thing down. THerefore not providing enough water to sump to have the skimmer effluent into a seperate chamber.
but yet it started foaming right away to my surprise.
I'm going to be changing return setups soon, evaluating different options. but will for one be efficient.
The GRI i'm wondering about, since its low wattage, but i've never seen anything on its noise level, i imagine with nothing stated about it, it's probably not quiet. The eheim1262, maybe an option I think i have close to the same restriction going to tank as the skimmer causes. Not sure if will be enough to have the skimmer exit going into seperate chamber without running dry.
What i'm after is a ~7-900 gph @6ft head, quiet and less than 100 watts at that level.
I may end up back with just keeping the LG-3mdqx-sc if can't find better option. but chaeto/graccilaria is no longer in the return pump section.
It's a 55gallon tank using as a sump.
hmm. reverse the sump and use the eheim as return pump, and use the lg 3mdqx-sc as the skimmer pump??But that screws up my whole easy water change too. :mad2:
would mean i'd have to plumb in more 1.5" drain plumbing.
That will wait till at least tues, wed or fri. bday is wed so have a feeling it wont' happen then.

Looking at my sump configuration, I don't think I could do that. Well...I could I suppose, but it would shrink the refugium section, and that's already too small IMO.

I wasn't aware that the Mags were prone to leakage in an external setup...I guess that explains Marine Depot's position! I'm not too clear as to what about the Iwaki or Panworld would make it perform better than a Mag18? The flow on those pumps is significantly less, and while they are pressure rated pumps, you have to go pretty far along the head axis of the Mag18 to get to the point where its output is as low as the Iwaki at 0 ft. Or...am I somehow misreading something?

well, considering the eheim kicks the sen's tail i'd take aqua-c's testing into consideration.. the best is the iwaki, then eheim, then mag9.5 then mag 7 for the ev180.. you're going 240 though, so i'd say the upper mag which you have or the iwaki/panworld.
think it has more to do with water throughput stability as long as its in its range of gph it needs. Like the variation of flow coming down the durso's affectin head pressure.. with that iwaki, it takes a bigger difference in head pressure to see a difference in output.

Hmmm, that makes sense. I was just startled to see the 0ft head ratings so vastly different (1800 gph for the Mag, 750 gph for the Iwaki).

Btw, I was thinking more about the suggestion of modifying the sump, and I think there is actually a way to do it without screwing up the refugium section. This is going to be one ugly sump when I'm done :D

ev1000 here, switched over from mrc style skimmer. couldnt be happier, as it started pulling out skimmate within 2 hours of operation :D im using a pan world 200ps.
