Aquaclear Powerhead 70

My unit does not have that sticker on it. My sticker is different. Maybe you have the Canadian version ;).

Jason

To the best of my knowledge it is a requirement to pass the CSA for approval to sell the unit in Canada.
That being said, I have over 30 of these under the previous name they sold under, Hagen 802 power heads, and they have been all underwater for as long as I've had them.
The oldest ones are 12 years old now and the newest ones are about 2 or 3 yrs old.
As for hooking a hose up to the output tube, I have some with a piece of 1/2" cpvc tubing that shoves into the output tube and then I push the clear fexible tubing onto the cpvc piece.
On most of them not used as power heads, I use 3/4" cpvc tubing shoved "over" the end of the output tube and then again use larger tubing to push over the end of this tubing. The larger tubing cuts down on flow restriction so this is my preferred way to go.
I have these power heads used as returns and as feeds for my DIY skimmers, routinely pumping to 5 foot heights.
One advice I would add and that is to once a month, dismantle and soak the power head parts in white vinegar, or diluted hydrochloric acid. (if you use vinegar, remove the O-rings first, and in both cases, if you leave the main housing in too long, like a day or more, then the acid softens the potting medium inside the housing)
Depending on how much calcium is in your tanks, and what the alkalinity is, the buildup of calcium deposits on the shaft make the impeller assembly rise up and the plastic impeller rubs on the rotating output housing, wearing it away.

After reading others responses I think the immersion line on the model pictured is because of the air hook-up. I have hooked up airline to them when they are submerged fairly deep in the tank and they produce bubbles. Obviously the venturi works much better when close to the surface of the water.

I used to have one until it sucked my healthy GSM clown fish up into it and killed it... I also witnessed it try to suck my 30" long eel into it. Do yourself a favor now and get a couple maxi jets or a seio.

thx, rayjay.

Dwayne.. i actually have 2 maxijet 900s in my tank and they're great. i just have the aquaclear to use for water changes...

Do you guys think having 2 mj900s in a 55g will give enough flow? I hate to get cyanobacteria.

I think you are really pushing it but you should be OK.

There is no reason whatsoever why you would need to go get new powerheads. DOnt waste more money on seios. Fish can and will get stuck to Aquaclears IF you dont put the quick filter on it. Puffers are notorious for getting stuck to powerhead inlets, and they end up dying usually. I too lost a clown to an AC70 with no strainer but have gotten smarter. ANY pump with a direct open inlet will suck fish in.

is there a rule on how much waterflow you should have? One of my MJ900s in the tank has a Hydor water deflector. Should I add another PH then?

I currently have a minimum of 400GPH from my MJ900s in my 55 gal.. should I add more flow? If so what is a good powerhead/pump? I read that you can never have enough flow...

thanks.

A couple SEIO M620's or M820's would work wonders in your 55.

Dear Jason,
Yes, this pump is fully submersible.

Thank you,
Sharon Emond, Customer Service Dept.
Rolf C. Hagen (USA) Corp.

That clears it up.

Why does yous have the sticker with the water line? IDK, email them and ask.

Jason

Jason,, I emailed them and they said the same exact thing.. In any case I ened up putting it in my tank. I also bought another SEIO M620 to add tonight.. I now have 2 MJ900s, 1 Aquaclear70 and 1 SEIO M620.. a total of 1480gph.. Is this enough for my 55gal?

Still planning on getting another M620 to replace the AC70, which will be used for pumping out water (it works, by the way. pumps water no problem.. 5 ft from the ground)..

I have two of them in my 46 and they work great. they do end up sucking thing into them . I have bioballs on mine but that did stop if from sucking and chopping up my bubble tip. but it survived. thats why I don't have power heads in my 180 i am building.I used a closed loop instead. but i do like these powerheads

I know what you mean, spidey. Especially after getting the SEIO. However, I did manage to put the hose adaptor on the Aquaclear70 and I had one of those small strainer cap from my MJ900s so I put it on the end.. works great and fits perfectly. I don't think anything can go in that.. Let's hope not.
