Aragonite sand/rock in Jax?? I think so.

Not sure of the name, but it's at the bottom of the Dames point bridge NW side of it....there's some huge piles of this stuff as well as others. There's definitely aragonite on that lot.....

I see the ship from Bahamas offloading there quite frequently while passing in the river, I think I have the name in an old thread and will post it if I find it.

Scuba do you still have enough of it extra to let some of it go?

How much do you need (comparable to 5 gal salt buckets)? I'll check tomorrow to see approx how much I have left. I've kept it in a sealed container and haven't opened it in years.

Haven't done the vinegar test yet, had to do a few things and then headed out to the monthly meeting. Were you there tonight?

Work keeps me from making the meetings, but next month I hope to work a day shift and make it. The meetings are a little later now right.....I've met many of the members outside of meetings though.

I could use a couple buckets or so if you don't mind.... :)

do you happen to know the name of the company or the address?

I was going to bring you a bucket of the stuff I spoke about earlier, but I did not make it out of Tampa until after 4pm yeasterday. Obviously, too late to make the meeting at Atlantis. Perhaps if you want to see some (I already have it screened out and washed), we could meet near Middleburg? I live in a subdivision just off 220 near Baxley.

I just checked and have approx 1 & 1/2 buckets worth left. I used a 6gal IO bucket to check. It may be more like 1 & 1/4 buckets.

Let me know if this will work for you. We can meet up somewhere and switch from my containers to yours if you want. With the 9A extension, I'm only about 10 mins away from Atlantic or Beach and 9A. The evenings work out better for me.

Sam, when you go out to Middleburg you should swing by my place and check out the tank. I'm only a mile or 2 off 295 in mandarin

What's the chance of getting contact info for the source of the Bahamas sand? I need 40+ tons of it.
Thanks,
Picasso

I have heard many rumors over my time searching for this sand. The latest is that the mining of this sand has ceased. I can't remember the name of the parent company off hand, but if you read through this entire thread, I name it earlier on.

If you're going North on 9A, is it the place on the north bank/town side of the bridge? If so, the name is Marrietta.( not sure spelling is correct )

Coincidently Carib-Sea is also based in Ft. Pierce.

Yeah, and coincidently, are they the ones that charge $1000 for a 20# bag?? Not knocking you achilles1, rather, knocking them!!

All of this sand business really is a trip. I'm picking up a 300 and a 100 July 8th and I need sand like yesterday. However I REFUSE to pay top dollar for.....well sand. I can get 1/2 a ton for $16.50 Why would I pay $25 for 1/25th that amount. That is insane to me. Not to mention the further south you go the more the beach sand becomes increasingly carbonate. Check out this link(don't miss the cool microscope views) http://www.gly.uga.edu/railsback/sands/sandsfloridageorgia.html With that said there has to be sand available that was dredged out or whatever locally.

I went to a local place today and they have ordered substrate for Sea World and Disney. They had a good amount left over, but it is too large. It's all shells with the larger peices being about 1/2". I'm going to grab a couple buckets just to mix in on top. More importantly the guy there confirmed that it came from Ft Peirce and they have finer stuff availble.

Worst case scenario for me is that I drive down to Davie to pick up the 1000# I need. Heck I am taking my son snorkeling anyway and even with the drive and buying the sand from a guy down there it is still cheaper than straight up buying it from a fish store or whatever.

Ok, I'm done. Just a bit frustrated. I'd better go to bed. lol

I did a dive offshore of Jax on Friday, and while on the bottom this thread actually crossed my mind. The sand around the reefs and wrecks offshore of here looks absolutely perfect for reef tanks. I need to devise a way to get some of it while I'm down next time. I think I'll experiment with it in a 10 gallon tank that I wanted to make a local tank out of anyway.

This stuff looks just like the sand in south florida and the keys on their reefs......Hmmmm I need to try this out.

Can't on just take a 5g bucket to the bottom and scoop some up and bring it back?? Is there collecting restrictions on sand??

Nope, no restrictions..... That's what I've got in mind, using a bucket and a lift bag to bring it to the surface. We'll see, I'll post results should I decide to pull this off.
