Are Ecotech Quiet Drives Really Quieter?

I don't get how upgrading the driver only makes the pump quieter. I have a set of mp60wes and what you guys are saying is if I upgrade it will make them quieter and still put out same flow ?

I think there is enough empirical evidence that it doesn't really matter whether you 'get it' or not. I'm not an engineer, and was somewhat skeptical, but after replacing just the driver on my MP60 and dispensing with most of the noise, I'm a believer; even if I too don't entirely 'get' why it works. The important thing is that it DOES work

Yes, I completely agree!

If I were to guess, they have probably refined their sine or square waves that the driver is sending to the motor to control it and also the amount of sampling and computing that the controller is able to do. This doesn't seem like it would be enough to account for all of the noise reduction but it does start to make sense when you think about it. They could tune the impulses (sine/square waves) to the brushless motor to smooth out the on/off/on/off surges to the motor. If they fine tuned this enough they could get a very smooth operation out of the same motor that was previously loud/rough.

This is probably recent technology and only available from more recent drivers. BL motors not only need to send a signal to drive the motor, they also receive signals from the motor to tell them where the stator is in relation to the permanent magnets. The controller (or driver) has to constantly receive this info and make adjustments to the signal going to the motor. If the processing power is increased then the controller can make these adjustments more frequently and more accurately. And if the controller is able to adjust the shape of the sine wave going to the motor it could smooth out the power output of the motor even further.

Are Ecotech Quiet Drives Really Quieter?

Just installed my mp40qd on my tank which is 3/4 inch glass and the inside houseing is spinning help?!?!? Oh and the pump is silent!

is it possible your wetside has something stuck inside that prevents the magnet from spinning on its own?

It finally stopped maybe it was just aligning itself i just took it outa the box and stuck it right in the tank. I was worried that 3/4 glass with a black vinyl sheet was to thick for this pump!?

I will also say i probably should of got the mp60 for my tank as my tank is 6 feet long but the mp40qd will do for now.

FWIW, I have had that happen on multiple occasions. Sometimes with a brand new pump, other times after having removed the wetside for a cleaning. I suspect it's either 'auto aligning' or just working out a bit of friction. Either way, it stops after a day or two.
