Are mp10's big enough

the issue here is the length of your tank. you are pushing the boundaries of the flow limits of a MP10. 24" is super, it will crest water really high. 36" is good, it will still have effects.

48" is so so, and depends on what you are looking for.

i like a lot of flow, but dont go nutso with it.

Am I wrong in thinking that I only need it to push water 2ft of the way, since I'll have one on the other side to push the other 2ft?

I have 2 mp10's on my 57gal Illuminata and think it's perfect. But I think I would go with either 20's or the 40's on a 90.

I just can't seem to justify spending $300+ on a used powerhead only to need one more for enough flow.

If 10's aren't enough I think it is financially best to just go with 10's and extras like a closed loop or a pair of k4's...

Shaunt,
I went to a friends place to check out his 90g mostly sps tank (not quite sps dominated) and the only thing he has for flow is a quiet one 5000 and a single k4 and there is not a dead spot in the tank. You could see polyps moving around at every corner of the tank. Now I'm convinced that a pair of 10's will do just fine...

Just buy it man, these people with 100x + turnover in mixed reef tanks are crazy. If it doesn't work, sell it on RC and lose like no money. :)

I only have a 34g solana for now :o

I'll probably order it within the week and put it on the other side of my solana at a low setting...

whether I upgrade to a 90 or a 60 I think a pair would work just fine.

Brad,

I am in your same boat and I think I have decided to go with two mp10s and put them on the back wall for my 120g build. I will also have dual returns at ~800gph each and I think it will be plenty. I guess we will see.

Boom! :D

My thought is that I can start with mp10's and add less expensive ph's as I see fit.

Get the MP10s and a mag 9.5 return pump with a sea swirl and you will have plenty of random flow.

Tagging along, as this is exactly what I have been debating.

New build is a 36x24x24 90G with external C2C overflow. I want as little equipment inside the tank as possible. Mixed reef stocking, some SPS, more LPS and softies. Sump will be remote, about 12 feet away (horizontally - not different floor) and I am going to run a Reeflo Dart for the return pump. I have a new Vertex MOcean 2000 that I am not sure if I want to use or not (put the $$ into internal pumps instead, perhaps).

I have an MP10 on hand. I have been going back and forth about buying a new MP40w ES, adding another MP10w ES and upgrading my existing to wireless, or just going to a couple Tunze 6055's with a 7096 contoller (the tank maker is a HUGE proponent of Tunze versus Vortech and has been working on me to switch teams).

After reading through this thread, I think folks may agree that based on the wide flow of the Vortechs and the only 36" length of my tank, a couple MP10s might work almost ideally, especially if I use the MOcean as well.

Anyone see any horrid issues with that?

With mp10w ES availablilty I have decided to go with 2 mp10s instead of 1 mp40. I think it would give me enough flow and more random flow. If it is not enough I can add another 1 or 2 mp10s and have some great random flow. We will find out

I just put an mp40w on my 90g which is current lps dominant and moving to sps in the future. Even at 85% on reef crest mode with a hydor k3 in the tank as well + my return pump it wouldn't be anywhere near enough for a tank full of sps. My lps are handling it well and I think with the 3 k3's and mp40 I currently have my lps won't even be too bothered with proper placement. The flow is not "insane" except directly in front for 1.5 ft about. The undertow is amazing though, and the broadness of the flow very impressive.

On a 90g sps dominant I'd use two mp40's for sure if I could afford... for now I will get by with one and my korallias. I imagine you can get by with mp10's depending on what you're keeping. Even on a small tank I'd still be inclined to do the mp40 and dial it down. The broadness of the flow and not having to crank it to 100% will be good for longetivity and stop motor from getting too hot.

you know, going by the information I've read about the mp10's actually pushing more water than they're rated for and the fact that mp20's only push 2000 gph, I see no reason not to just go ahead and use a pair of mp10's... Heck, I might even buy a pair with ES and put the one I have on the back... hmm...

this is what i'm doing on my build I rather have a pair of the smaller ones than only one of the larger ones. It provides you with more options
