Are nuvo 16's still cracking?

As a follow-up, I spoke with Innovative Marine about the issue. Their service was less than stellar, and they offered me a IM Fusion 10 as a replacement, probably because they don't want further issues with the curved Nuvo 8 or 16. They said they don't have Fusion 10's in stock however, and they would not be able to get me one "for at least a month"! So after purchasing an aquarium that doesn't hold water, they were willing to replace it, but not for another month, which certainly wasn't an option. I ended up purchasing the CadLights Mini 8g with the optional LED, which will go well with my CadLights Artisan II 50g.

My Nuvo 16 failed today. A large crack from the top front through the corner to the bottom of the side. I didn't have any extra equipment connected. Just the initial set up. I have a lot of damage to my hardwood floors, and to the ceiling and lighting in my finished basement. This situation is not going to be resolved by a replacement tank. My home has a damage that will need to be fixed. Has anyone else pursued a products liability claim against IM? Given all of the previous failures, I doubt that I'm the first. Thanks.

2+ years up and running with my Nuvo24 and no issues. I'm not the original owner of this tank. I've had it for about 2 months now. It is a 2nd gen. Made with 7-8mm glass. The first gens were made with 4-5mm glass. I hope I'm not cursing myself by posting this. I love my tank.

Really you want to sue a company over failing glass? And people wonder whats wrong with this country. Everyone is sue happy and no one claims responsibility for their own actions(its always someone else fault right?)So if your toilet cracked and ruined your floors would you also sue them?

You do have to assume some responsibility when you put a glass tank full of water in your home. Things fail on occasion, its just the way it is. I doubt there is a very high failure rate Vs. the amount of tanks sold, but you only hear about the failures. No one comes to a forum to compliment a manufacturer when things work the way they were intended, they only come to complain when things fail.

Well, I agree that suing probably takes place a lot more frequently than it should, but at what point does a manufacturer have to assume responsibility for a faulty product? This sort of product has the potential to cause quite a bit of damage. In reality, homeowners/renters insurance should cover the damage barring any kind of water damage clause, but again, when does a manufacture become financially liable for damages directly related to their faulty product(s)??? I don't know how many they've sold, and I don't know how many have failed. But, in the three-ish hours that I have been researching, I have come across about 10-15 cases that show IDENTICAL failures in the glass.

My Nuvo 16 just popped open yesterday. Had it for 1.5 years, and loved it. I understand that things fail, but for this same failure to continue to happen to so many people is unacceptable. I was one of the lucky ones. I was home and preparing for a water change, and was able to catch most of the water in my buckets.

My nuvo 16 has a serial number 11/11/0302/375, so far it survives with no crack but I learned so much about IM products and they are very poor design and quality, they are looked like being designed and built by amateur. Both of my Nuvo 16 and 34 have same issue where the wet and dry wall warping and the silicon snapped. If this tank is design by professional, they should know acrylic and glass will not bond with acrylic. If you want peace of mind get Clear for Life Uniquarium, more expensive but reliable and durable. Acrylic is easier to scratch but it can be fixed and much stronger than glass. I have been using uniquarium nothing else.

I'm very happy with the resolution from IM. I posted this is another thread.

Update: Innovative Marine has been so exceptional to work with. Thanks to Randy at ARC, he has worked out a deal with them to get my tank replaced with a Fusion 20. He's letting me take one of his in stock tanks now and IM will replace it for him in the next shipment. It sounds like both of them are doing me a favor to get me the different tank, so I really appreciate that. IM has been outstanding though, very professional and apologetic.

i know this is an old thread but i just had my IM nuvo 16 crack as well, called IM twice and no return call...what did they need to send you a new tank? did they need pictures or anything ? I'm ready to get rid of this tank.. tired of seeing it. You could say I'm bitter this thing destroyed my floors & not to mention my poor daughters heart when she lost her babies.

After 5 years of set up, my nuvo 16 cracked today, right along the corner edge. After researching the company-- Yimco, Inc.-- and discovering that countless others' tanks have failed in the exact same spot, it is clear that a class action should take place. If there are any litigators on this forum, please PM me-- would love to hear your thoughts on filing a cause of action.

In order for the warranty to be applicable, customer must submit proof of purchase, serial number, and any other applicable materials pertaining to the purchase of the product. The company might could be well aware that they sold a dangerously faulty product. Because this product is failing-- at an alarmingly high rate-- well out of the warranty coverage range, and the company is negligent in issuing a recall, the company in-question should be held liable for damages.

Please PM me for more information. I will gladly coordinate with any folk who have had problems with this tank. The amount of damage this tank causes to office spaces, homes, etc. is staggering. Let's find an competent litigator and fix this!

An additional note: It is absolutely crucial that vendors review supply contracts with IM. LFS can be held negligent/liable-- as well as aquarium service(s) companies. Any vendor who carries a faulty product can be held liable.

This company should rectify the error, and recall the product. Defective product(s) are dangerous-- especially in the case of aquariums. Has any person had a fire start because of the faulty product?

I'm not sure if it was mentioned...

But there are 2 generations of the Nuvo 16s... One has thinner glass and one thicker. I returned my first one and picked up one of the newer versions. I've been running 2 years with no noticeable fault... yet. It would also suck to have it break because it is on my desk at work.

I hope you have better luck than we did, ill be sending pictures with my serial number in hopes i can get my tank replaced or even a new one discounted. Maybe we just got an older one i have no idea.

Agreed, re: desk at work.

These tanks are the perfect addition to a boring office space. Contacted the company and they are swift about replying. Let's see if the company makes good on standing by their product(s)...

Sorry about your fish, Saltypilot. Fingers crossed.
