my lfs got in a monti that looks like a jedi mind trick. the piece I already have at home has a smoother surface with red polyps and blue rim like this and is encrusting

the piece at the lfs looks like this with deep ridges and is more of a plating type growth. took pics off google

are they the same montipora? I really like it but don't want to buy duplicate corals

Based on the pics and description I would say no they are not the same. I'm with you as I'm not a fan of duplicates. That being said if you buy it and down the road you decide you don't want it you can always sell it and you won't be out anything.
