so a true percula? it's pretty hard to find true percs here in b.c with lots of black. so if its a pair of true percs, i'm gonna go for it.
even though its a rip off.. -____- 40 dollars each!! (tank raised)

tank raised? If they are marked as True Percs and you can trust the LFS (you can't always) then it is more than likely they are in fact true percs.

were they marked as true percs?

no, they were listed as "tank raised ocellaris"
but i was not pretty sure cuz they looked different from ocellaris. anyways so you don't know for sure if they are percs or ocellaris?
i really want a pair of true percs, with lots of black!

Really hard to tell from those pictures, need a more clearer side shot for certain. But from those pictures it appears to be a nicely colored perc.

imo, if they are tank raised and sold as ocellaris, then they are probably ocellaris... (sorry to change on you... :o) ) for 2 reasons:

1. Breeders tend to know what they're breeding

2. Even a shady LFS would prefer the higher price tag that comes with selling true percs over selling them as ocellaris

imo,

Matt

village, the store is called big als.. it's not really that trustworthy. they sometimes sell fish covered in ich and other diseases.
but seriously though, i really want to get that pair, but i don't want to get a pair of ocellaris. argg
but most of you guys think they are percs? :D thats great news for me :P

steve, i edited my post, as u can see from the picture, the ocellaris doesnt have the thick black bars as the clowns i posted originally! and thats what is confusing me the most :S

ok. I was wrong they are true percs i did alittle research and found that the bars are thicker and yours fit the description of the true perc.

What makes you say that phender? Is it the black lines alone?

I thought that wasn't always a good indicator...

yeah, if they are percs. I'd ask the guy (though it sounds like he's shady) who the supplier was for the tank raised fish... if he shows you that its a reputable supplier, then they probably are what they are labelled as.

imo, a shiester will usually mislabell the fish as the more expensive speices inorder to sell at a high price, not the other way around, but if these could very well be mis-identified... :)

maybe the next time you are there you can try counting dorsal spines? :) Though that won't necessarily elimanate either species... :)

Not only the black lines. The general body shape shows percula. Also the height of the dorsals. When you have seen a million of them and them next to each other all the time its becomes easier. These are easy to tell the difference imo. But, some can be alot tougher to judge and make a decision on.

meh, i bought them :) they are currently in my Q tank, i'll post some photos later. and i'm sure they are percs! i asked some other guys at another fish store after i bought them!

Glad to hear that everyone's happy! More pics please! ;)

Edit: Yeah, I've noticed that a lot of ocellaris tend to have higher dorsal fins, but I wasn't sure if that was a species trait or just that occelaris hold their spines erect more often.
