Are we worry too much??

I'm having temp problem with my 29G for the last couple weeks now. It went up to 88 and dropped to 73 almost every other day. The salinity level goes from 1.26-1.29. I haven't lose anything so far. They don't even bleach. I don't have anything expensive that's why I just kinda leave it to see how much it can handle :D.. Kinda like a test :smokin:

Do you think coral can handle temp swing much more than we think??

Oh yeah I don't have any fish in it. I can tell snails don't like it that much because most of them are dead :rolleye1: ..

Yum Escargot. :D

I dunno but I freak out when my tank hit 83.

Some can handle it, some might not. I think as long as the temp goes down it'll work well, I'm just happy I moved my tank downstairs (where it's cooler) after yesterday's 85 degrees *phew* hot for SF

15 degree swing is alot! Even when its hot my tank only goes up about 3-4 degress 77-81 max. How hot is the room the tank is in?

Why are you seeing such temperature swings?

I can't understand how it can get down to 73 unless your heater is busted.

Also, 88 is a pretty huge deal, most never see anything over 86 in the wild and certainly not anything like that swing. How is your tank getting that hot?

What are you doing to keep it cool?

You should at least kill the lights if/when it gets to 86.

FWIW: My 72 is between 83 and 85 with 2X250 MH and a $9 fan from target venting the hood.

My 20L is 80 - 84 with 220w of PC and a $5 fan. I haven't figured out the heater yet so I'm slowly bringing it up to 83 also. I have always run it much cooler but I'm starting to bring them all up to natural temperature.

edit: I wish I had A/C because we do get the 20-25 degree swings in the house. 70 at night and 90+ in the afternoons. Damn fish have it better than me.

It got to 88 because the fan wasn't on (somehow, it was turned off) and the temp in that room was over 90 (thanks to my mother in law, whom keeps open the doors and windows when it's 85 plus outside :mad2: ). With a 250W MH on a 29G, it didn't take long for it to go up that high.

So I turned off the light and moved the fan to a different outlet. I had it setup so the fan kick in when the light kick in. I didn't have enough outlet on the power strip so I have to unplug the SEIO pump to plug in the fan. I left the fan ran all night on high speed.

Went I waked up in the morning the temp dropped to 73. I thought my heater setting was low so I increase the heater a little bit and it kicked in. I went to work and when I got home the temp was still low (the light wasn't turn on yet). I found out that there was no flow where I put the heater. So only the area around the heater was hot. There was no flow in the heater area because I turned off the SEIO pump.

My wife is the one told me about the temp problem. I don't pay much attention to this tank. I only do top off and since there is no fish I don't have to feed anything. Sometime I even forget to topoff for couple days. When I found out about the heat problem, I was surprised that it didn't effect the coral. Usually when the temp that high, coral would bleach over night. So I kinda test it to see if multiple times would cause any problem. So far no coral die or bleach yet except the snails and couple peppermint shrimps.
I stopped the testing yesterday :D .. Temp of the tank is around 84 today. House temp is 87. The AC guy will come out to fix the central AC tomorrow. Hopefully I won't have any more heat problem after that.

That makes sense. Sorry about the problems. I've left my fan on the 20 overnight a couple times. It does get down to around 73 and the 150w heater just can't keep up. It's pretty amazing how well it cools down the tank.

It takes time to dial in everything. I adjust things almost weekly to adjust to the weather conditions. Also use timer's they help a lot. Fan speed and chiller temp setting.
