i got the asm mini skimmer. I havent had it running full time yet but I tested it when i did a water change and man it was pulling some crap after an hour.

This might be a double post...if so sorry:
I've had my G3 up for about 2 months now with great results..
But over the past 2 weeks it has been going crazy -I did not add any additives or do anything differently.
It will just start overflowing like mad for no reason. Then I can set the top of the foam very low and it will not skim anything for awhile and all of a sudden go crazy and overflow like mad...I cannot just set it and leave it anymore.
Has this happened to anyone else? I am going to take it apart and clean it, especially the pump, but its only 2 months old, so I am not hopeful that that is the problem...any other ideas?
Thanks

Just set up my new G-3 (stock) and am getting some bubble leakage around the gasket where the air/water enter the tube from the pump. Is there a good way to seal the gasket? Does anyone glue theirs?

All my ER's and ASM's do this . IMO its minimal and nothing to worry about. But you can replace the gasket with a uni seal for a water tight fit.

I have had it happen when the air intake gets clogged . Also sometimes feeding will do it and there are times it just does it . Could be an air interaction thing.

your water level must be changing. which is the only way it can make a difference. Clean out your pumps, check to see if there are any clogs in piping etc.

Ok, I'll clean the thing.
My water level does not budge...its toped off by a float valve and remains steady as a rock...
Thanks though!

BTW I feel the skimmer pump should be cleaned bi weekly along with the venturi opening.

I was just going to ask this. I have had my skimmer for less then a month. My venturi was completely clogged to the point I could barely blow air through it and could not see through it at all.

It is all good to take something like a metal coat hanger to scape it out as it is hard and builds up onthe walls.

I use the little flat tip that cam with my milwaukee controllers for calibration.

Micro Bubble

Micro Bubble

New to the club :)

One quick question.

How long does it take for the micro bubbles to go away?

G1x on a 54 corner
Mag 7 Return

I did run the skimmer in warm water for a day.

Thanks

clkwrk - I saw in the show me your skimmer thread you opened up the venturi intake a little, was there a big difference in performance? Did you just widen the hole a little? That was some nasty skimmate :)

Well I did clean it out and I think it was that the venturi tube was getting clogged. It seems to be working back to normal.
Anyone have any tips on keeping it clean? Or do you just pull it out and clean it every few weeks...and if so, do you just clean the tube or the tube and the plastic part that connects it to the pump or both of those and the pump, too?
Thanks

sabodish, who built your glass tank? I am researching so manufactures for a 210/220 and noticed your current tank specs.

As far as the re-circ mod, I have a G3 with re-circ/gatevalve mod and I have never seen such fine bubbles in my life....it has only been running for about 4 days and it is is starting to get frothy :)

There was a decent difference. It allowed more air to be sucked in .

pull it out and soak in vinegar, then rinse out thoroughly. both are needed to be cleaned regularily. (monthly)

I keep that venturi air intake clean by filling the air tube with vinegar while I'm cleaning the cup. Keeps from having to always pull the skimmer out since I have it hooked up recirc style. Once a month I also take a long piece of thin braided cable (used to hang pictures) and mount it in the chuck of my cordless drill. I run it through a piece of tubing to keep it from kinking and only allow a couple of inches to protrude from the end. Then I place the exposed end in the air intake barb and slowly let it rotate like a plumbers snake. I'm able to clean my skimmer intake without taking it out of the sump, which is great since I have it shoehorned in there very tight.
