I have heard that a maxi-jet 900 or 1200 would be fine for a G-3, I'm planning on running my G-3 directly from my overflow. It should have about 400-500 gph that way. I might have to put a ball valve to slow it down some but I will not know that until it’s hooked up. what is the foot print of your skimmer with the recirc mod? I'm trying to get and idea of how much room to leave in my sump. Thanks.
I hope someone can help!!
I just set up my G4 on a 180 center overflow. Salt is mixed and put in some live rock and sand to cycle the tank(from a 60gal reef)
The skimmer was doing fine for the first couple of hours but now all I get is the cup filling with water-no waste. I know there is a break-in period, but I cant leave the skimmer for more than 2 min. before it overflows. I do have the gate mod and it is open all the way and it still overflows
If you have the gate valve open all the way then you must have some blockage. Try taking the gate valve off and peek inside to make sure it's 100% open. How is your gate valve configured?
Dont understand your ?
I made it the same way on the ASM web site. The only adjustment I made was to shorten the last pipe so the water leaving the skimmer goes over the baffle wall instead of returning into the portion of the sump where the skimmer sits.
FYI- the skimmer sits in about 8-9in of water
I am getting ready to do the recirc mod. I had My G3 out and did little measuring. It looks like about 16 inches will be plenty of space with the standard MOd. If you mount the pump Deltec style (verticle) 15 should work.
I finally got my tank setup yesterday and got the G4x with the recirc mod running.
The first thing I noticed that I need to correct is the sedra 9000 is loud. There is a lot of vibration noise that using the inside of the stand like a drum. I can tell that it is magnifying the skimmer noise.
Other that the obvious mouse pad does any one have a recommendation for something to quiet the vibration noise?
I plan on using some sound dampening board to line the inside of the stand, but I need some to quiet the skimmer pump.
MJAnderson, hm... the only thing I can think of is improper water level. My skimmer sits in aproximately 11" of water. Could this be a problem?
Another Q: what is "normal" water level in skimmer should be? I mean does water should come up way up to the collection cup? or to the part where skimmer has narrowed?
That's not unheard of. They are supposed to sit in 6-10", although someone on here said it works best at either 8 OR 12, nothing inbetween.
On mine, the water/bubble line is about 1" below where the collection cup attaches to the neck. For wet I move it up an inch, for dry I move it down 1". At that level my skimmate is very dark but not sludge.
i found that hooking up a "U" bend piece of pipe to the output of the gate valve and have the water come out of the "U" bend just above the water helps a lot with the micro bubbles. Instead of having the water come out of the output pipe of straight down into the water.
I still have to drill the skimmer for a feed pump inlet.
my measurements after the recirc and gate valve are 14"x9". I still have to trim up the output connection of the pump to the skimmer to even things out but here is what looks like so far.
*i set it up in a 10 tank so that i could stick the pump's suction bracket/mount to the glass*

Two questions:
Does closing the gate valve raise the water level in the skimmer?
If it does how do you know how high to have the water level?
I have made adjustments and it looked good with just a little bit of scum coming into the cup, then come back in an hour or two and found the cup full. How do you regulate so the cup doesnt overflow?
BTW- MJAnderson
I changed my gate valve and it works great now, thanks for the link
