What does opening and closing the gate vavle do?I am trying to move the water farther up the neck but dont know which way to turn the valve.

RIGHTY TIGHTY LEFTY LOOSEE

Left opens the valve = lowers the water level
Right closes the valve + raises the water level

Sorry I can't help you there I don't have an ASM yet but am planning on one. The left right thing is standard, on my current skimmer I started out with half way up and adjusted from there. It takes a while to find that perfect spot for your prefrence

Best words of wisdom my father ever gave me. I refer back to it often! =)

any chemicals (water conditiioner, additives, etc) can cause your skimmer to react that way. Mine actually overflowed quite frequently (about twice a month) untill I finally got it under control. I am still not sure what caused mine to overflow but it nolonger does it. good luck HTH

So it sounds like this is an issue with skimmers in general and not asm's? My only other experience is with a Remora HOT which never did this (or much else for that matter).

many needle wheels have this problem of being sensitive.search euro reef or asm about constant adjustment. they unfortunately are not set and forget skimmers for some. I personally am tired of adjusting mine. I have been toying with getting a deltec or h&s to replace it.

Anybody running ozone through their skimmer? I have a G3, with the recirc mod.

If the ASM can take it, is the contact time long enough to allow me to skip the carbon on the output?

Recirc Mod, which sized drill bit?

Recirc Mod, which sized drill bit?

I have a 1 inch uniseal and a 1 and 3/4" hole saw.
I have a 1/2" MPT to 1/2" hose barb piece but I'm not sure which size drill bit to use.

I can't find a 22/32 or 11/16 as ASM Skimmer recomends.

If I were to use a 3/4" drill bit would a 3/4" MPT to 1/2" Hose Barb fit in there? Am I supposed to use a slightly larger then 3/4" drill bit and if so what size?

Thanks (I'm new to this club)

You could ask Randy in the chemistry frorum but my guess is no.

ASM G2 with gate valve mod.

Don't tell me that every member of the ASM Skimmer club bought their ASM that way! Surely someone on here did a DIY recirc mod. Anyone? :(

How about, take the fitting that you want to use and measure it.
Then you will know what drill bit to use.

freds:

I did my own DIY recirc, gate valve and direct feed mods. A couple of pictures will follow.

As for uniseals, a 1" uniseal uses a 1 3/4 " holesaw. I got mine at Home Depot for about $4 or $5, I think. Here is a link for buying uniseals that also shows the corresponding hole saw sizes required:

Uniseals and corresponding holesaw sizes

Here's a pic of the initial setup (bubble trap has been upgraded, and return pump upgraded to Mag drive 9.5 since this pic):

...and here it is working away:

Hope this helps!

Cool thank you for the help and photos I have a 1 inch uniseal and a 1 3/4" hole saw. I'm worried about the feed part of the mod. I guess I just have to order a 22/32" drill bit online as Homies and Lowes don't stock the off brand sizes. I'm surprised there isn't more on the net about doing the feed mod. I guess people either ghetto cut a huge hole and patch it with silicone or they order their skimmer with the feed mod done already.

I was planning on cutting a hole in the top of the skimmer body to fit a 1/2" MPT to 1/2" hose barb adpater. A 1/2" MPT is WAY bigger then 1/2", almost bigger then even a 3/4" bit will make a hole for. I guess I just have to order an 11/16" bit online.

I just used a 1" uniseal for the feed mod as well.

As you can see from my pics, I have 3/4" ID flex hose (comes directly from my DIY durso standpipe overflow) that is attached to a 3/4" hose nipple, to a 3/4 pipe x 1" slip adapter, to 1" pvc pipe, to 1" tee, to 1" pvc pipe, to 1" uniseal in skimmer body. No "ghetto hole" in my skimmer ... LOL!! Off of the tee is a gate valve I use to by-pass the skimmer when I need to empty the cup. Seems like I end up doing less adjustment this way. The large gate valve is used to adjust the water height in the skimmer.

I stayed with the 3/4 " hose and 1" PVC because I didn't want to restrict the overflow in any way!! (No floods for me, hopefully!!)
