ASM Skimmer Club!

As I recall, ASM guys (manufacturer) made a post somewhere strongly advising against using ozone in ASM-G skimmers. But I can't remember the link.... ...or am I on drugs again?

For the record, I have used Ozone for 3 years with no adverse effects and many other users have also.

Thanks for muddying the waters.

Where is everyone drilling the holes for your feeds after doing the recirc mods? The ASM website recommends 1/2" below the neck but I wanted to make sure this is what everyone else does.

Billy-

I drilled mine so that the top of my feed hole is about 1" below the bottom of the cone. I wanted to make sure there was room for the uniseal, not to mention I was scared that I might break my skimmer!!

It's working great for me!!

I believe its better to feed much lower in skimmer body. Say 1/4 to 1/2 down the skimmer body. I noticed up high, create too much turbulance at neck. My G4X is drill @ 6" down. One of the better DIY guys here on RC agreed when I asked. In fact he said "Closer to the r/c pumps suction the better"
I am thinking it creates better contact time :)

Thanks for the replies. Charlie those were the exact thoughts going through my head. I'm also using a MJ900 for the feed because I've been advised using the overflow drainage can create surging and will be too much flow (600gphs or so). Do you agree with that?

I have to admit,, My first trial with overflow feed, messed up.. Surging- Large bubbles causing the skimmer to burp, etc. Can't remember why it was happening  Anyway---
I am now feeding my G4X with return off the tank again. I have a tee in-line, with a gate valve on the return. I dump part of my return into the slump (my 2 returns=1000g ??)
Your feed depends on skimmer size. I believe a G4X can Handle 500-600 GPH ( been wrong)

"Closer to the r/c pumps suction the better"

So we should be feeding that close to the bottom??

I'm very happy with my set up; lots of thick, dark skimmate...no burping or surging.... But, always interested in opportunities to improve things!:D

Larry, I am in no way and expert.. I have tried feeding near the top and now I am feeding 1/2 down.
the only thing I really notced different was- it did seem to remove some turbulance at the neck.
Since the skimmer is R/C, the supply water should be mixed reguardless of location.. But maybe the closer you get it to the suction of the pump more of it will be mixed in the pump, and allowed more air contact. Sorry I may not be typing what I am thinkly correctly-- Breakfast is sitting in front of me-- I'm gone (for now) ;)

I just went to asmskimmer.com and saw that they stopped selling asm skimmers! Who is selling them now, anyone? Or do they not make them anymore?
I wanted to buy a uniseal for my G3- does a uniseal make much of a difference? (They do still sell the parts).

I think global aquarium supplies carries them still. I bought some parts from them about a month ago.

How long do your skimmers lose thier foam for when adding new things such as PVC hoses into the system.
My G3 stopped producing foam and it has been almost all afternoon and still no foam...
My MRC beckett skimmer usually does similar things when adding PVC, Selcon , ect... but usually starts foaming again after a few hours...

In my limited experience I had found few cases where skimmer is getting lazy:
- new or just cleanned out skimmer (needs to break in)
- low bioload (less skimmate)
- not tuned in properly

Does anyone have photos of how they are injecting there ozone on there ASM skimmer? Has anyone had problems with doing this?

anyone add a second pump to a g4+. I want to add a second pump with recir mod and the original pump can feed the water to the chamber

Is there anything else that would cause the foam to stop?

I've noticed when I clean and rinse anything in softened water (without drying it) and add it back to the system that the foaming stops for a while. Also, sometimes oils or other things that could be on your skin can interrupt skimming. I've found that it always starts up again, eventually.
