ASM Skimmer FAQ's

Here it is, sorry for the quality..

I'm sure you can see from Paul_PSU's photo that your gate mod is much closer to the top rim of the chamber. That means the water has to go way up before it's above the gate. With a water level that high around it (in the sump) you just don't have enough water above the sump water line to push over the gate mod fast enough.

From that photo, I'm certainly not surprised.

I'm surprised at the water levels i'm seeing in these sumps. The skimmers certainly won't work properly with water that high because they can't drain properly but with the water within a hair from overflowing already, what keeps your sumps from flooding when the power is turned off and water backflows out of your tank. I hope your not relying on a backflow prevention valve.

this is the pic of me trying again, but like i said before, I have a stand tht i have tried and removed the legs to try different sizes with no sucess... the higher I go, the slower the water shoots out, but it still eventually shoots out...

I actually made my baffles too high and due to the space under the stand cannot lift my skimmer. I let it run in 13" or water and it works very well. this is my collection cup after 5 days.

I've got the G1x version, I've done the mesh mode and bored out the venturi, I found that using a hose with a wider inner diameter dropped the performance so I went back to the stock air hose.

This weekend I'm going to do the recirculating and the gate valve mods. Will a Maxijet 1200 be good enough for a feed pump?

Should it go in at the same height as the original or lower?

Straight in or 45 degree to the side?

Would the swirl created by a 45 be good or bad?

What is the largest tank that any of you guys would use a g1-x on? I know it is rated for 150, just looking for opinions. Currently have it on a moderately stocked 55, looking to go to a 100. Thanks for any and all input...

Honestly I have the G3 running on my 105 gal system (75 DT + 30 sump) I will be upgrading to a 150 soon so that will be about 200 gal total system volume. I am going to do the recirc mod when I switch to the 150 and I'm not sure that will be enough skimmer. I can't imagine the G1 on a 150. I think you are pushing it with a 100 gal tank + sump. If you do all the mods and have a lightly stocked tank.

thats kind of what i figured, i was thinking of a g3 anyway...just hard to come by in wa. the g1-x should get me by for a while though right? thanks

G2 or G3?

G2 or G3?

I am in the process of setting up a new 75 to replace my 55. I am entertaining using a G2 or a G3 like you have on your 75. I'm thinking that I'll have about a 20-30 gal sump/fuge (depending on the space I have in my stand) Do you feel that your G3 does a good job for your setup? Do you think it overskims at all and maybe a G2 would be better for your setup? I'll probably do the mods once I find a few decent explainations on how to do them. I don't want just one opinion that why I look for other who have done the mods.
Thanks for your feedback.

Has anybody tried to mod their skimmer to point the water going into the chamber down instead of straight over? ..or am I missing a part?

I have a G4X and once I pushed the output of the sedra into the body (half way up the chamber), that's it...it blows straight to the otherside. The result is less than 2/3rds of the skimmer body has any bubbles in it...a real waste if you ask me. I didn't see any parts to make it do something else.

I was thinking maybe elbow it down so it blows down instead of straight across to give it more use of the body, but then I'm concerned I'm not really getting and prolong contact becase the water comming in would be draining right out the bottom!

I really didn't want to do the recirc mod, but the more I look at this design the less I feel it's doing anything. And I'm not getting much skimmate (of course my tank is huge and light loaded too, so maybe it's nothing).

Please do not trouble shot on this thread. This thread is intended as a FAQ page for ASM skimmers.
Please trouble shoot in the ASM Skimmer Club! thread. If you want to add information that you think other ASM owners might find helpful, please do so. Thank you.

I guess some people dont understand what that means... Was there another thread that was started on the ASM brand skimmers? Im looking to mod my ASM G3, but cannot find a thread about it that isnt 11+ pages long with various random questions...

ASM Skimmer thread well over 11 pages, with all the splits over a 100.

I have a g1x in a 20 gallon long sump is this too deep soni need to raise the skimmer? how much of the skimmer should be out of the water

That will depend on your pump..since the amount of water above the sump water line in the chamber is what pushes down and out the riser tube. There has to be enough water above the sump waterline to push out the water as fast as the pump pushes it in.

I've never tested different heights since I run mine pretty shallow. I also did the gate valve mod to allow for tiny adjustments on the water level.

I know it's been forever... but, Oh my... did you ever correct this problem?

Your "bubble traps" are backwards, which puts your water level WAY too high (already mentioned). I hope you drained and re-did it years ago... I'd hate to know what happens when you shut off power to the return pump. :hmm2:
