ASM Skimmer FAQ's

Thanks guys. I probably would have taken your word for it any way xaoss. Just dont want to ruin an expensive skimmer with ozone.

Again, thanks for the help.

Guys.... Please, Please lets keep this a quick refrance thread... Please ask question in the ASM club fourm...
I posted on page 2 that ASM skimmers are ozone safe....

Please only post FACTS about ASM skimmers so people can use this a a quick refrance......

TIPS: setting the ASM skimmers for, well, skimming :)

1) wet skimming (looks like weak coffee)
set the bubbles in the collection tube, inside the collection cup, to 1" from the top of the tube. Sit back and wait, it will produce very wet foam.

2) dry foam ( will produce very dark smelly skimmate)
set the bubbles to the bottom of the collection tube inside the collection cup. Production will be much slower, removing more organics and less saltwater/trace elements.

What setting should you use? For the most part, produce the thick dry foam. If you just blew off your rocks, stirred your sand, or the water looks a bit yellow/floaties - increase the rate of production for a day or so to clean things up a bit.

The goal should be to remove enough to keep your system healthy, but also keep your corals and macro fed with some organics. These skimmers are very good and can actually overskim fairly easily. Over skimming requires weekly water changes of at least 10%.

Disclaimer: These are not scientific facts - but I did sleep in a holiday inn last night :)

Has anyone hooked the intake, after installing the recirc mod, from a uv? I want to add the recirc mod and hook the output of my UV to feed the skimmer.

just a quick question. where would I get a replacement venturi for a sedra 5000? also if I was to buy a new sedra 5000 does it come with the venturi?

I don't think this would be a good idea, unless there is no other place to put your UV.

The tiny particles in the water that your skimmer is pulling out will block the UV light from killing some of the organisms. I run my UV after all my filtration on the output of my return pump.

Hope this helps

I have a question for a G3... is the sedra 9000 the best pump to use for it? Actually that really isn't my question, I've talked with a lot of people that say 9000 is better for 5000... real question is if the SEDRA at all is the best pump for it or if I should look towards the aqua-bee or oceanrunner pumps. I can't find this info anywhere on RC. How hard is it to fit those pumps into the G3? Thanks and cheers!

i have a G3 and am about to do a recirc and gate valve mod.

for the gate valve mod i know it matters which order you put the parts in (elbow, T, Gate or gate, elbow, T)

what i am wonderin is does it matter the distance between them.... like if i did elbow, gate, T should i have them as close as possible to each other or 1-2" apart? will this matter or have any effect on the output.

thanks,
Steve

I understand that you set up the gate valve mod : elbow, gatevalve, tee.
My question is what is the function of the tee? Why not just add another elbow after the gatevalve? Does the end of the Tee that points up help reduce microbubbles or something?
Thanks

I'm getting a G1 because it is the only one I have clearance for. I will be using a 3500 instead of the standard 2500. Are there any modifications that I will need to make?

I think it is the bubble issue and my guess is that it eliminates any back pressure that would make the level in the skimmer itself fluctuate... Just a guess though :bum:

You don't need to make any. But the gate valve mod is easy and has been VERY helpful for tuning.

ASM G-2 Heights

ASM G-2 Heights

For those of you who have been trying to figure out if the ASM G-2 skimmer would fit into your IN-STAND sump/Fuge see below for measurements. The reason I find this important is that I needed to make sure that I kept my baffles in the sump low enough to get this thing out for cleanings. (Quite important for those buying manufactured sumps/ for those using DIY sumps you can alter your design as needed) If some of you folks that own the other models could post the body heights of your skimmers, I think this could help others in deciding if the respective skimmers will fit into their set up. For other dimensions please see the chart made by NwG and Tenshi.

ASM G-2 Body = 15 1/2" tall without Cup
ASM G-2 Body = 13 1/2” tall without Cup and Cone

I've had a ASM G2 Skimmer for over 4 years and it has been awesome! Six months ago I upgraded from a 175g to a 265g with a sump and have continued using it. Last week I discovered that my Sedra 3500 pump is gone. In speaking with some, I've also been informed that the ASM G2 is highly underrated for my new system. My question for all of you:

Should I purchase a brand new ASM Skimmer (G4 model) or will I be fine by upgrading my Sedra pump to a 5000 or even 9000 model to work with my current ASM G2 model? I want to note that I simply love ASM Skimmers and I am currently running a tank with only 2 fish, 1 shrimp, several snails, and 5 corals---including Montipora and Acropora. Any quick response will help, as I have got to place an order no later than tomorrow for next day deliver. Thanks!

Would anyone be willing to measure and post their ASM skimmer's footprints WITH the mods (ESPECIALLY the G2 ;) )? I think that would be very helpful to some people
