ASM Skimmer question

I've been running an ASM G5 skimmer on the live rock I got with the 180 for almost two weeks now. I had been slowly adjusting the standpipe up to try to get a wetter skimmate. I woke up this morning to an almost full reservoir bucket (luckily I made it 7 gallons) and the overflow cup was just overflowing into the rock vats. I adjusted the pipe all the way down and it still immediately fills the overflow cup. What the hell is going on? I have the riser as low as it will go and still can't control the bubbles, while I was havign an issue getting it to foam enough to put anything at all into the cup... What can I do? The water level in the holding tanks has not changed... As I reduce air flow into the venturis, the water flow increases, so no help there.

if it helps at all... when my er starts to overflow it's cause it's getting too much water not enough air. I am able to fix it by checking the venturi for salt build up (make sure its clean). Then I warm up some ro water not hot or anything and let the rubber hose connected to the venturi suck it up to clean it out. You have prolly tried this but oh well just trying to help.

gary this isn't an answer why, but I think if you just pull the riser tube all the way off the unit that will keep the skimmate down and from overflowing the collection cup...don't know why it's acting possessed though. Did the cats mess in it? :)

That's really weird. Are contaminates an option? If i pulled the riser tube completely out of my g2 it (water level) wouldn't even come to the middle of the main body. Have you tried running your sedra 9's independently?

not meaning to hijack... wowa how goes it aquaman? Deployment still happening?

Yeah i modded my euroreef with a gatevalve and it works much easier and better.

I'm thinking about the gate valve mod, but I don't know that it woul dhave helped here. Wide open on the gate valve is like a completely lowered riser, isn't it? Or is the back pressure from the piping downstream of the gate enough to drop the level?

I cut a new riser that is a little shorter and it is back to where it was. I guess you might cut the riser down some for the gate valve mod...

Contaminants could be at play, but only because they are in open top tubs in the living room. We don't use aerosols... She did to kill a spider very near the tubs about a week and a half ago and I let her know she should never do that again;). I keep waiting for Dottie to jump in...

Can I get gate valves locally (have never even looked at Lowes/ HD)? May be a good project for the weekend.

There was a plumbing supply down by the fairgrounds on nolensville, right by where the train crosses over headed towards murf road. Looks like a large wharehouse. I used to get gates there that are used for acids (pure plastic. no metal save for the screw on the adjusting knob). They looked exactly like the ones in jacks link but with a blue body.

I think you should check the air inlet as Titan and Foggy suggested.

Aspirator type skimmers will increase water output from the pump as the air supply is cut back or obstructed.

A good trick to keep this from happening (from salt creep and such) is to put the skimmer pump on a timer and let it shut down once a week. Water will back flush the airline and dissolve and build up. Works on venturi skimmers as well.

The place near the fairgrounds is called Steinhouse Supply. I don't know if they carry gate valves in PVC, but they are probably your best bet in town. I would call them first, the guys that work there are very helpful.

Thanks guys. I had run some water through it previously, but it didn't do much. I did it again after cuting a shorter pipe and it reacted almost immediately. One of th etubes is not really mounted to the skimmer housing, so it is propped up against the tub. A much easier way for creep to creep it's way in;).

Yeap, I have 9 days of freedom left!

"A much easier way for creep to creep it's way in."

Let me think about that for a while and I'll get back with you :D

No pun intended;).

Jack,

Hope the next 9 days work out really well for you. Are you still working until you leave, or were you able to take some time off?

Thanks....

I took two weeks off, but I have to interview people Monday night. I'll still be the Chief Operator when I get back so I wanted to be the one to hire someone.

I think my wife can handle my tanks, so that's one less thing to worry about.
