I got a new macro lens (Canon 100mm) and took a few pics to try it out. Still learning. Not as crisp as some I've seen but what a difference a nice lens makes.

- turn off all pumps
- parallel your lens with glass pane
- using shutter-release cable since little movement will rune the whole shot (both on the subject and the camera)
- using tripod
- find the focusing point (the best point best that describes what you want to say about the picture)
- f/16 or more will give you more details on the subject
- shutter speed....well, it depends.
- patience needed (most of the time)

to be honest....picture 1 2 4 5 , I don't get what you are trying to say, and your fish picture is off-focus.

to be more honest,....you have done a very very good job for your first try. I'm serious. :D

Yes - but do so within reason. On a crop bodied camera you start introducing diffraction at about f/11 (and ~ f/13 on full frame). Diffraction causes a loss of sharpness. I'm not saying that you should never go above f/11, I'm just saying that don't go any higher than you need to for a particular shot; i.e. if f/11 gets you the DOF that you need, don't go to f/22.

Your depth of field preview button can be a big help in determining how much of your scene is in focus so you get the right aperture.

Cheers

Thanks for the feedback guys. I have already learned a few new things. I'll try some new pics with your suggestions and see what I can do.

Round 2

Round 2

I took some more pics using some of the guidance given. I am liking them! BTW, I am colorblind (red/green-very common) and I did a little postprocessing but I never know if I am creating wacky colors or not. I usually ask my daughter if the colors look like the corals but she is on a sleepover so I was on my own. All I did this time was adjust lighting/contrast.

I have two 12K 250W MH plus 4 54W T5s (2-Giesemann Super Actinic and 2-Actinic White. I find that I get better results underexposing by 1 or 1.5 stop. I tried flash (Speedlite 420X) but it seems to wash out the colors. Is this white balance? Do I set it differently when using flash?

Feedback welcome.
