Astrea snails dying off

I have PLENTY of hair algae, so lack of food isn't a problem. But have noticed over the last few weeks that my astrea population is dwindling. Probably doesn't help that zebra leg hermits are voracious little bastards and very opportunistic when a snail is bottom up. Seems like the snails would rather be on the glass than chowing on my green hair algae ... is there a better species for hair algae removal?

Astrea's are primarily diatom grazers, they don't like the hairy stuff. That's why they like your glass better ;) The large turbo's, most often from Mexico, are very good hair algae eater's as m1enbo1 mentions.

diatom grazers primarily ... didn't know that. Thanks for the info Bill. I did have one good sized turbo, and that thing ended up dead as well. No fish mortalities, snails only. Maybe I'll try another mexican turbo or two.

well, one downfall about turbos is they like to live in cooler waters just like margaritas and they prefer temps between 72-78 i believe.
