At what size does a Regal Tang need a bigger home?

I've purchased a 125g setup off Craigslist that came with a Regal tang. I know the tang guidelines indicate a 180 gallon minimum for this fish (no biggie gives me an excuse to setup a bigger tank in the basement). What are everyone's thoughts on what size will necessitate a space upgrade? Currently the fish is about 5" and seems to be thriving (take that with a grain of salt, I've had this setup for a grand total of 2 days).

I would imagine the 125 is a 6' tank? 180g isn't any longer, which is the first concern for these fish... Have you ever seen a large blue? They can be cramped in even a 500g IMO... But you do have a couple inches to go IMO before you have to concerned... Regals are awesome, but they are definitely something to plan for and consider long term... They, like vlamingi tangs, can grow like made when fed and kept properly...

But for now I'd say you good for a year or so...

They definitely would love a larger tank, I don't think a 500gallon is a necessity. I would just say make sure that its atleast 8 feet long when you do get a new tank.

In your current tank, do you have any other tangs in with him? He might look even more cramped in your current tank if you have a couple larger fish. I would say until you upgrade or remove him try to limit your purchases to small fish

It's a 72" tank with a 4" orange stripe chromis, a 6" kole tang, a 1 .5" royal gramma and a .75" blue green chromis ( in addition to the hippo). My plan for this tank is to be a reef with various small, peaceful fishes. The kole tang will ultimately be the biggest fish ( after setting up a bigger home for the hippo) Certainly not planning to add anything bigger than what's in the now.

I had thought my basement tank would be a predator tank ( really want to try a miniatus). I'm assuming a 8-10 inch hippo's going to be fine with aggressive fish?
