ATi light on fire

I would increase the feeding for your corals with symbiots however. Less light needs more food. They will need the additional "nutrition," to compensate for their symbiots not producing.

Two weeks is a long time for the corals to go without lights. If you get some natural sunlight you MIGHT make it. I would address it ASAP. A shoplight with some daylight bulbs would be better than nothing IMO but no guarantees.

Very strange. ATI makes quality stuff.

So a ballast overheated.

You think so that quickly. ? The light was on for maybe 3 min if that. I had the lights off for 3 days prior just flipped them back on when I got home from work. I don't know much out how the lights work. Is that normal. ?

When you turn on an electronic component that is cold you have a high inrush current, there is no heat to cause resistance. Ballasts are designed to limit the current. Clearly this failed, it got hot and fast enough to ignite something.

How a ballast works.

At the very least maybe grab a few PAR38 LED bulbs and put them in a few cheap fixtures if you are concerned with the lights being out that long (I would be).

I emailed the site I bought it from and hope to hear back from them in the morning

I would go to ATI directly. Where you bought it from most likely won't be interested, and will direct you to the manufacturer. I imagine ATI will be very interested to know what happened and why.

ATI would be my first place to contact.

It couldn't have they cost a lot of money . Only the cheap ones catch on fire :jester:. Check again you must have been hallucinating :frog:!

Lol yeah trust me I didn't want to shell out that kinda money so wasn't happy when my daughter said that it was on fire lol

Looks like that one wire may be grounding out. I'd be going to ATI with it as well. This can show them holes in their quality control system, where they can correct them before someone's house burns down. You got lucky.

I said that to the rep and he told me that it would not have burned my house down. It didn't really seem like they cared. The just told me that it would be cover under warranty and they could send me the parts to fix it.

wow, not even a new fixture....just a repair. Meanwhile you are stuck with no light while they make the repairs.

Unfortunately, that's pretty standard for most warranties. They usually put language in the warranty stating they are only responsible for the item itself, nothing related, and not for loss of use.

Anything you buy has the possibility of failure. Cars, electronics, etc..
It's not uncommon for manufacture to repair rather than replace. Unless its a truly a lemon.

The ATi rep said he is going to repair it on their dime after I I told them ups wanted 100 to pack it and send it to them. I thought he could have been alittle more on my side. Almost made me feel like it was my fault. Because he has not seen it. I thought they would have want it back to look at it. Lol

All in all as long as they fix it I will be ok with it. My wife on the other is ****sed that I bought a 700 light and it failed. I'm more concerned for my corals

Almost looks like it overheated at the contact and then lit the plastic holder on fire. Wonder if there was some corrosion or otherwise poor contact that lead to a high current density causing excessive heat. Did ATI have any theories?
