Does anyone have any ideas? I don't see any aggression with him and a yellow wrasse, 2 clowns and 3 chromis...... Water change weekly, nothing's wrong with tank.
Never owned one but I know a lot of fish change their appearance at night. Could this be part of the mottled color change since you described that this was in the morning? Check the fish after the lights have been on for a bit and see if they have disappeared.
Hard to tell what it may be from the photos but I think it pretty clearly isn't ich. It almost looks like it might be a reaction to some kind of stressor (rather like Naso Tangs go blotchy when they are unhappy).
