ATO question

I need a little help here. My DT is in my living room and my topoff water resevoir is in the basement. I currently use a mag drive pump/floatswitch to pump it upstairs into my sump. Problem is: ive currently burnt up 2 mag drives because of the constant on/off cycle of the switch/relay. What system to i need to implement (auto level controller hooked to my ro/di?) To alieviate the constant on off cycle that is killing my pumps?

I have a kent marine hi-S 60 or 75 gal/day rodi.

Suggestions?

You could use the mag to pump up to a small holding tank and then use a regular topoff set up,

The only thing I can think of would be a digital timer that runs X number of times of times a day for X number of minutes. Connect the ATO to the timer. Then, your ATO only runs every so often, as dictated by the timer, but the ATO's switch still dictates the amount of water necessary. Don't screw it up and put the timer directly to the pump.

I tried the timer for 15 minutes a day but the level would change so much that the skimmer would be ineffective. Maybe ill hook it back up and do like 4 15 minute times. Dont they make a system to integrate my rodi with just the water pressure and no pump?

I read somewhere that there was a booster or stronger pump available for the tunze osmolator. It may bet worth checking with tunze

I did something like this. I started with a tub for my ATO pump to pull out of. After I got tired of refilling the tub, I just changed my electric ATO to a mechanical float valve that was hooked up to my RODI. I think the same thing would work for you. Mount the RODI as close to the tank as possible (but keep it low enough to be easily serviced). If needed, add a booster pump to it to up the pressure so that it makes it to the tank.

I use this ATO - autotopoff.com/
Connected to a Hagen Power head sitting at the bottom of a Rubbermaid trash can full of RO water. Small hose connects the power head to the sump. Power head needs to be lower than end of hose going to sump, hose going from power head into sump needs to be out of the water in the sump to prevent siphoning. Been setup for close to two years, no problems.

A peristaltic pump or something pressure rated would work. I think the Taam aqua lifter is rated at 10 vertical feet. I've had the same one for 3 years, just replaced the diaphragm a few times.

Not surprised a mag died quickly..

Think im gonna try one hooked to the rodi but what do they sell thatll shut off the product AND waste water when the switch turns off?

You don't want to do that, you'll kill the membrane from that stop/start cycle, and yet usually takes a minute ot two for the ro to work at its maximum.

At the very least you'll deplete your di too fast.

A peristaltic pump is really what you need if the ro unit is in the basement. A dosing pump from BRS would probably work.

Found out that I didnt burn the mag drives up. Broke the magnet in one and the shaft/mag in the other. Im just gonna let it go how it is for the time being and get on building my basement sump.
