ATO reservoir built into sump?

Ian

I <3 Corals!
Im sorry if this doesn't belong here. The reason I ask in this forum is some of the best planning goes into the systems in this forum.

Im throwing around ideas for a sump for a new tank and Im thinking about incorporating it into my sump.

I know there are pros and cons to this idea but I'd like to hear other's thoughts.

Do you have one and if so, would you do it again?

Ian, If you have the room, I would suggest not wasting the sump water volume space by including the ATO resovoir in the sump. Plans change over time and then it would be dead space.

I have built several sumps this way, but only due to space limitations. One was a 250G corner bow, that HAD to have everything underneath. I even notched the sump to fit around the steel stand. If you have room, go for the biggest reservoir you can.

The reservoir is 12g in that setup but still was too small for the owner to keep full- tank is profesionally maintained. He brought me back in to build a topoff for the topoff reservoir:D I mounted the DI in the laundry room upstairs and 50' of 3/8 tubing buried under a baseboard to transfer the water!

A custom tank such as a sump should be utilized fully for system volume IF you can remotely mount a ATO reservoir. These tanks will be much cheaper per gallon too.
