ATTN: LFS employees

Or they want you to dig through the tank of 5,000 feeders & get them "that one". I spend more time chasing that .13 fish then what it costs the company for me to sit there chasing it.

this happened Sunday at about 4:30.

Im driving to my LFS to trade a few frags before they close at 5. As I enter the parking lot i see a guy pouring liquid out of a 5g gas can (the big red ones) into a 5g bucket. I thought nothing of it at the time. (plays in later)

So as im talking to the Owner ( about 4:40 now) this guy with the gas cans walks in the front door and heads straight to the back of the store. Owner asks me to wait a minute so he can help this guy out. I agree, and follow him to the back of the store where i start looking at the frags i want.

The guy tells the owner he needs 5g of salt water for his tank. I immediately (and quickly)walk over and ask the guy if he was the guy pouring gas into the 5g bucket at the end of the parking lot. He says "yes". The LFS owner looks at me puzzled. I ask the customer why he was putting NSW into a Gas can. The guy says because he didnt have anything to put the water in. I then asked him why he didnt just put the water into the 5g bucket he just poured the GAS INTO!!! The retard told me, i quote, "Because the 5g bucket was contaminated"

IS THIS GUY FOR REAL?!?!?!

How do people like that make it in this world?

LOL too bad stupidity isn't a felony!

My biggest pet peeves are people touching the water or glass..seriously, have they never touched water or glass in their life?!

I get the most upset at adults...of all people why would an adult stick their hand in the water...I never get a sorry when I ask them to please not to do that. Also, I'm not a babysitter, why do parents let their kids run aimlessly around a store and have me watch over them to make sure they don't do anything stupid. LOVE when a parent just watches their kid stick their hands in the tank and/or does it with them.

long story short...mom was watching her kid stab and kill a clam with a net *was standing side by side* and the kid was constantly dunking the clam in and out of the water. Woman was told she needs to pay for it and said fine until she found out the price of it...The woman said she wanted the clam then and it was bagged for her and she complained it was a different clam and was bigger *yea because the net wasn't pried out of this one...* Later the husband comes in *****ing, but becomes understanding when he actually hears the true story and comments "Well, it's hard watching little kids." Unfortunately the security tape wasn't watched till after that comment where we saw the mom staring next to the kid watching exactly what he was doing for a good 5 minutes.

Cars have too many safety features. Stupid people don't kill themselves off in accidents like they used to.

So I was in the LFS the other day, I am not employed by them but they like me, err, I mean my money so they let me hang around.... Anyways, there was a man and woman in their later thirties. They have a FW and looking at going SW. So the employee (kind of wet behind the ears) was telling them about all the stuff needed. Got to the skimmer and they asked what it was for. He answered it takes all the bad stuff out of the water. The "fish poop" goes in helping them to understand.

They want to look some more and discuss so employee walks off. I see the lady really trying to understand the skimmer and asks her husband how the fish go poop into the skimmer and then make it back up into the tank. :lolspin:

I darn near fell to the floor laughing out loud. I busted a gut and had to apologize to them. We all spent the next 45 minutes discussing SW tanks and invited them over to view mine.

Anyone love those customers that come in on their first or second time and ask for a discount on a single fish/coral?

Then if you deny them they continue like this...

Literally after asking for a discount 5 times...

c: come on just give me a discount for it, I will take it right now!

me: Sir, I'm sorry but our prices are already low as they are.

c: I saw this same fish at LFS for cheaper, match the price!

me: Sir, if the fish was the same and a lower price why didn't you buy it?

c: This one is much nicer!

me: Well, now you know why it's more.

c: But it's the same fish, price match!

me: If you want the fish for that price you can drive the distance to that other store and waste time and gas. *to save $10*

c: But, I really want it. If I buy this $10 frag you sell me the fish for $$$.

me: *Yes he is really trying to tell me the price of the fish now...*

Sir, you're are insulting me, I put the time and effort in to maintaining and keeping these fish healthy and still delivering them at low prices and you still want them to be lower for no reason.

c: Ok I will take it.

Thank you for wasting 30 minutes trying to negotiate with me when you could have just bought the fish initially!

Discounts are given where they are deserved, but who do these people think they are?! I don't go to the grocery store and ask for discounts!

Oh...pet stores...

Oh...pet stores...

I worked in a petstore in southwest Virginia for over 2 years...

"How much of that there salt (points to box of freshwater aquarium salt) do I need to keep 'dem nemos alive??"
-what do you even say to that? He was holding a fish bowl in his other hand...

C:"The bunny I bought died"
Me:"I'm sorry sir, we guarantee all of our animals, may I see your receipt, and can you tell me a little about how you were keeping it?"
C:"I had him in an old microwave"
Me:"WHAT":worried:
C:"Don't give me that S#$%, I catch squirrels, raccoons, skunks, and all kinds of animals and they live in old microwaves just fine!!!"
Me:"Sir, I can't give you another bunny"
....customer storms out...very ****ed off.

I also read on here where "everyoneshero" encountered people who called cichlids, "Chick-lids" THANK YOU!!! I hated that!!!

Also...we had at least 5 customers who said "allergy eating pelco" instead of algae eating pleco...

Sigh... sometimes I really miss that job...sometimes not.

Best way to combat that (from experience) is to make all "selected" feeders $5 each ;) once we implemented that we had far less doing it :)

Sounds like you worked at PetCo. :P

We never have enough plecos in stock. I guess they order the maximum that the company allows in the tank, but we get them in on Tuesday & by Thursday they're all gone.

Whenever someone comes in & asks for an "allergy eater" I just bag up whatever they point at. I have quickly learned to choose my battles. Sometimes you get that customer that is willing to take in what advice you can give them & actually research what they need to find on their own (I'm not an expert), others are just going to listen to me talk then get what they want anyway.

I work at a chain store so I can't do that. I've gotten pretty good at getting the "selected" feeders.

Most of my experience catching the feeders is from this one guy who I think lives out of his van. He's kinda goofy & always talking about how the government is after him & how this person or another f'd him on one job or another. But he's a break from all of the running around & other crazies so I enjoy it. I think he lets them loose in a pond or stream so don't be too surprised if you hear about wild goldfish being spotted in Southern Maryland. :P

ooooh lord.... How did I not see this earlier?
I'm strictly a saltwater guy, so IDing a lot of other fish, especially Africans, is not my strong point... Believe it or not, this is the shortened version...
c: *pointing to a tank full of fish labeled $10*. Ill take one of them
*I net out the fish*
C: No, no, no. I want him. *Points to an odd fish out that is clearly not the pseudo that is labeled ont he tank*
Me: I'm not certain what that one is. Hold on, let me check a price.
C: it says right there. It's $10. Bag him up.
Me: No, these fish are clearly labeled $10. he is clearly something different.
C: He's in a tank that says $10, he should be $10.
Me: The $10 label is right under the name of a different fish...
*another guy comes over. Cant ID it, and says just to give it to him for $10*
C: see? He told you to. Bag up my fish.
Me: I've been workign here longer than he has, I think it's the Lamp, niger., which is 25. *I take the fish away while the guy is yelling at me to bag it up. I ask my boss and I was right on the ID and the price.*
*I tell the customer and he is complaining and I said I will give him a deal since it was in the wrong tank just to shut him up. i say Ill give it to him for 16. He offers 15. I ask if the extra dollar is really that important to him. He states he is just trying to meet me in the middle. (15 is NOT in the middle of 10 and 25...) I explain to the guy that the fish jumped over the divider of the tank and he states that is not his fault. I yell back it isnt mine either. My boss walks over, sees he is arguing and just say, "no deal. He's 25". At this point, the guy leans in to me and says he will take it for 16. i tell him no, my boss said it was 25 so i cant go any less than what he sells me. Needless to say, the guy was upset....

There is always the classic:
A guy wanted to buy a bamboo shark egg. I ask him what size his tank is (which has only been set up for 2-3 weeks) and he says it is a 29. i tell him he cant put one in a tank that small. he says he could, at least for a little while. I clarify and say I WILL NOT sell him one with a tank that small. And he goes "well Ill just come in when you arent working then" and actually continues to ask me questions and for my help as if I'm going to give it to him....

There was also the guy who kept yelling about our "outrageous" prices of black mollies and asking "why the hell are they so HIGH?!". It's a $2.49 fish. His basis for the obvious price gouging? They are $2.25 at Petco. I wanted to tell him there is one up 2-3 miles up the street, but he would spend the extra money in gas getting there... If he was goign to be that much of a stickler, I wasn't going to give him a "deal". he walked out, quite upset.

The cretins cloning and feeding!

There are some pretty cool customers. It's just the enjoyment of talking to someone that isn't an idiot is quickly nullified by dealing with someone who is. It's pretty painful sometimes.

"I need Frontline for my dog."
-"Okay. How much does the dog weigh?"
"I don't know."

"How can I tell if the hampster is going to bite my kids?" (The ones running around the store screaming & yelling. The ones picking things up off the shelves & just being nuisances in general.)
Stick your finger near it's mouth & see if it bites you. Chances are that since your kids don't know how to behave they're going to scare the hell out of it & it'll chew their fingers off.

RTFL!!!!!!! now i needed a good laugh!!!!!

i think alot of these stories are funny but at the same time they are sad. all you lfs employees just keep saying how dumb these customers are. isnt it your job to answer these questions and to inform these people. i feel that it is your job to make sure that no live animal leaves your store unless you feel confident that it is going to a good home. this isnt a simple hobby it is very complex and expensive with even the experts not knowing everything. i agree that some questions seem rediculis, but that is what you get paid for isnt it. i feel very fortunate that the employees at my lfs are very knowledgable and friendly
