Automated fry catcher sucess!

Thanks so much guys. Maui was the most amazing place I have ever visited and I need to post pictures that I took and create a seperate thread. I have some awesome pictures of some of the animals I could identify in the black lava tidal pools, which besides snorkeling and whale watching was one of my favorite things to do there.
While I was gone I think it helped that I had a care taker (my boyfriend) who is OCD to watch over my fry. I wrote every little task down for him and what time it was to be done. :reading: He vaccuumed the tank religiously, never missed a water change, and was precise with adding cups of strained rotifers. On top of this he text me all water perimeters every day and sent me a daily picture of them. Before I left I tried to automate as much as I could such as lighting and he just followed all my instuctions like a cook book recipie. I did not get my hopes up and did not expect any fry to survive! My clowns even laid eggs the day after I left and he collected a small batch of his own!
Now I follow my own instructions and have a daily checklist to make things easy for myself. I cannot wait for another batch to be laid should be today or tomorow to do it all again!
With all of your sucessfull batches do you have any tools like this you have made for yourselves? Thanks again for your encouragement and mentorship!~ Jo

AWESOME! see we can teach our boyfriends/husbands a few things....
Yes, I took notes everyday on everything I did so, if something went wrong I knew where the problem was....
Congrats on the babies! :celeb1:
Looking forward to pictures and updates!

Saltyjo quick question for you regarding thr fry trap collector.
When you turn all the lights off on the tank how long do you wait till you turn the little light on for the fry trap collector?

I answered in your post even before I saw this. I turn on the led as soon as I turn out all the lights in the room. I also turn out any movement makers in my tank such as powerheads and sump return pump.

Well the babies are 47 days old and my boyfriends batch is 34 days old. All doing well and growing like weeds. Since they are only 2 weeks apart and are relativly the same size, in fact some in the younger batch are bigger than ones in my batch, we are thinking about combining them into one tank for grow out. Has anyone did this? What was your process? Please keep in mind I do have less than 20 little fry and want to combine them in a 10 gallon. I want to make more room for a really huge batch of eggs that are due to hatch this week. Experience in this, thoughts or sugestions will be much appreciated!

Well first BIG congrat to you! I always knew you could do it!
How big is the grow out system?
erniqe combined his groups into a 55g set up....I just dont remember how old they were...
Maybe he will chime in soon :)
When I moved mine to a bigger grow out system, I filled the new tank half way with their "old" tank water, the other half with new water and just moved them! They did just fine.... A little freaked out with more room, they stayed huddled together for a day or two, but they didn't ever miss a meal...lol...

So you have a 3rd batch too?
Sounds like your doing an amazing job!

That is what I plan to do is combine both tanks water and move them over. Between both batches there is only 20 fry so I am just combining then into the one 10 gallon tank. The one ten gallon only has five little fish in it and they seem so lost. I was hoping Ernie would add some advice but more than likely I will move them over in the morning.

I'm sure everything will be ok...20 fish in a 10g should be fine... When I had to split my brood up, I was super nervous too... but with half of their tank water and half with clean water, everything went fine. I made sure the water was the same temperature and salinity.
Hope that helps...

Dumb question here what are you guys using for the fry from day one till they are ready to be moved to a grow out tank? Since yoy are moving them to a 10 gallon tank for the grow out period.

Not a dumb question. :lol2: I have 5 fry in one 10 gallon tank and about 12 fry in another 10 gallon tank. I am just combining the small amount of fry into just one 10 gallon tank. Make sense? Both of these batches are small, and I know others have had many many more in just one 10 gallon. Right now I am a little limited on space and I have a REALLY nice clutch that is huge. I am collecting them thursday night. I only have the space for 2 tanks and wasnt going to catch any more for a while but............:spin1: I think I have gone clown fish crazy. I dont think I will be satisfied until I raise 100 at a time like some of the masters on here!

Makes sense. I too am limited on space so I have been trying to sell some of my tanks. I know the feeling even though I have not been able to collect a full batch yet. I want to keep trying till I can say I did it. Raise them from fry to small healthy little clownfish.

I don't see any pictures of the fry tanks.

Can you post pics of the fry tank how you have it setup for the first 24hrs and other pics of the tank and steps you take right before moving into the fry grow out tank??

I am using this fry catcher for the first time tonight. This is our first clutch, and we are unable to remove the pot they laid on without exposing to air, so the trap was the next best thing.

Lights went out around 12ish. It is 1:30am now, there are 3-4 fry in the trap.
We'll see how well it really works in a few hours.

Did anyone have any issues with the LED light preventing the eggs from hatching?
I waited until 3:30am and there were still just a few fry in the catcher.

This morning the fry were gone and the rest of the eggs had not hatched.

We are thinking that the little LED light from the catcher may have caused a problem.

You need to have complete darkness at least 30 min to an 1hr before turning on the little led light. All pumps and powerheads have to be turned off prior to them hatching. Also what day did she lay the eggs on?

I forgot to mention I turn everything off around 9pm and peek in there to see if any are swimming around if they are then I turn on the little led light if not I wait till I see them out and about then I turn on the little led light. And when I turn off the lights at 9pm I am not up to all hours of the night but I have had a couple occasions I waited till 12:30am and only had like 10 to hatch but when I got up 90% of the eggs were gone off the rock.

Now I have had trouble collecting them in there a few times and when that happened I did the syphon into a bucket then scoped them out with my rotifer sieve and put into the fry tank.. Not sure if that was a good idea or not because I ended up losing all my fry by day 7.

I am hoping to have better success with my next batch coming up this weekend. Saltyjo and several others have given me valuble information so I am going to follow that and cross my fingers that everything turns out better then what I have been expereincing…

lights went out around 11:30-12. I waited until about 1-1:30ish to put the LED on.

We drained the tank lower than the overflow, and also shut the valve to that cube so no water was flowing in or out.

She laid on the back and side of a 6" (wide and short, not narrow and tall) clay pot. We couldn't remove the pot itself due to the fact that she laid on 2 sides of the pot and it's a bit bulky to keep eggs submerged.

I am off to work but should be home about 1-1:30am. Today makes day 8 so I'm thinking since a few hatched yesterday today is the day!
