Avoid caribbean blue aquatics in bayshore!

Hello fellow Long Island reefers, wanted to put a warning out to avoid Caribbean blue in bayshore for a multitude of reasons. Just recently two friends and I drove down to the store and purchased one fish each. All fish being of decent size/price; tangs, triggers, etc.

Within 3 days of being in the home aquariums, all developed Ich worse than I've seen, and ALL perished, we went in with pictures, receipts etc
So guess what? No money back, because "he isn't there to determine the conditions of our aquariums". Take note this is after we showed pictures of happy SPS color/growth. So to top it off, we are told that we create problems and headaches in this hobby returning fish. I won't get into numbers, but anyone who knows anything about reef tanks of a decent size, is that they are anything but cheap. My point for saying this is because I went on to tell the owner how much money I have spent in his store and how many people I have sent there originally (two years ago)...he then tells me "you've probably spent like 50$ here", word for word.

Aside from this individual story, the store has gone so downhill over the past year and a half. Fish getting sick left and right, dead fish found constantly floating in tanks in store (I've pointed out on MANY occasions), corals ALL browning, very rarely anything exclusive or colorful, same selection of corals for years, specifically the sps tanks with the uniform low contrast browning out look of everything.

Also take note I've stepped foot in this store probably over 100 times (no exaggeration) and spent well over $7,000 over the course of two tanks.. And built a good relationship with the staff members and new everyone on a first name basis as well as them knowing me. The owner takes month long trips regularly to Indonesia where all corals are corals are also flown in from. It's a pretty evident from the moment you walk in the store that the corals are not Australian or even worth a second look (most of them), and never will be for the fact that the owners wife is from Indonesia and they have a cultural tie there and won't go elsewhere.

I will say one thing, majority of the staff is helpful, but unfortunately when a store is run by an arrogant, disrespectful person like the one at Caribbean blue, it will usually only see decline in business.

I know myself and two others will never step foot in this store again and I hope anyone reading this will support other stores that are SIGNIFICANTLY better with much rarer corals and fish such as aquarium village in westbury, or tropical island in deer park. Country critters, aqua hut, magic isle, Caribbean blue ALL GARBAGE. And this is coming from somebody who lives in the middle of all four stores I just named but would rather drive 40 minutes further to avoid them.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. I love nothing more than to walk into a store and feel welcomed, the way tropical island and aquarium village do, instead of getting a nasty "know it all" attitude from employees who think they're on a throne.

Take care fellow reefers!

This is why we use QT tanks in this hobby. Doesn't matter which store you go to. Never expect that a fish doesn't have ich. If you know anything about this parasite you'll know why. I've been doing saltwater for over 15 years and would never expect a store to refund money for a fish that dies. I personally like that store and it's owner. Obviously if you went there over a 1000 times you did also.

All fish have ich Larry is right you should quarantine them.As far as I know no local fish store gives credit for fish that die.

I have had nothing but GREAT experience at Caribbean over the last 2 years and a lot of my coral have come from them, (if interested see TOTM Jan 2016)the staff is always helpful and courteous .

The other stores you mentioned are good also but be for warned if you buy fish from them they may die.

Sorry for your bad experience(not really)but your attempt to discredit them has failed with me. IMOP the customer is not always right.
If your rant made you feel better then good for you but if it was a attempt to discredit Caribbean Blue it did not work.

Sometimes **** happens
-Best of luck to you and the next shop you visit
Happy Friday :bounce2:

I agree with the others. Not only is it on you if you choose not to quarantine new fish. But there is a real possibility that ich is ever present in your aquarium anyway. Healthy fish are able to fight it off, but the stress of adding a new fish is enough that they will succumb.

That's not really the stores fault, and the tone of your post leads me to believe that you weren't all that nice when you went in their with your dead fish demanding money from the owner. He is right, he doesn't know what you did with it or what conditions it was subjected to.

I have only been in that store once.....I do know who I believe to be the owner and recognized an employee...both used to work at Aqua Hut. I was looking for a particular fish and had called them and they had it. At the store everyone seemed friendly and knowledgeable, they recognized me and I purchased the fish for less than what they originally were asking. The fish was and is fine and is thriving in my tank....no issues what so ever. I looked at the frags while in the store and did not find anything that would give me caution to purchase. I am confused as to why anyone would go back to a store where they felt had been declining steadily for the last 1.5 years. Even so.....if you were curious to see if things improved...why would 3 of you then purchase something? Seems a bit contradictory. Anyway....sorry for your losses and the bad experience.....remember the phrase..."caveat emptor" let the buyer beware.....by the way...all of the tanks at Aqua Hut state....choose the fish wisely....no returns/money back. You want a guarantee I suggest you purchase from Liveaquaria....14 days....

Sorry to hear you had such a bad experience at CBA personally it's one of my top 3 lfs on the island at least 80% of all my fish have come from them. Yes there coral selection can be a bit dull but you can find a nice piece every now and then when they get a new shipment in.

As mentioned by others I have never heard of any store giving a refund on dead livestock regardless of circumstances expect some of the online retailers and that's only on DOAs.

I understand your frustration, but that's part of the hobby. So is putting new fish through quarantine.
You learned an expensive lesson here. Many here won't admit having learned it the same way at some point.
About the store, expecting a refund is more than just optimism. As others have mentioned, it's not commonplace for a LFS to give a refund on a dead fish. Also as mentioned above, how would they know what kind of conditions you subject that fish to?
I have never been to that store, and I know the owners of the stores I do frequent. I'd never ask Richard to give me money back on a dead fish, and I know Bob Novak has to have official policy in place to tell you that they don't guarantee livestock.
It's a drag to lose fish, I hope the rest of your tank doesn't suffer from the experience.

When that store first opened in that location it was a joke. Everything had ich and their coral tanks had junk armature lighting. However since the staff changes a few years ago it has gotten 100 times better and I now go regularly. Their coral selection is better and their livestock is no longer entirely infested with ich. In fact I haven't seen any ich there in some time. They have really stepped up their game.

A good QT system is really a must in this hobby. Many places still have a 7 day credit policy you just need to ask and good luck getting them to honor it. But they pay only a couple of dollars for most fish so it's no sweat off their back to give you another fish if your a regular customer.

QT is a must...

i dont agree with you bringing back the dead fish and expecting something from them, but im not a fan of the store. better stores within 10-15 mins of the place that id rather spend my money.

Overall I find the staff knowledgable. Their fish have been healthy for me. Their prices are moderate and the fish selection diverse. The coral selection is often limited.

i must say,, just be careful what you purchase.. I got monti eating nudis from there,, yes 100% them.. my tank is finally making a comback now,, and this is me being super crazy w dips and scrubbing before adding anything to my tanks... it was on the piece i bought after a month... ate all my montis... ****ed wasnt the word.. i stick to lps, nems there,. ill never touch an sps coral from the store again,, granted it can happen anywhere,,, i'll buy sps from members only

if you look at there sps or montis, the parts the look bleache are actually monti eating nudis
