I am looking at a whole house generac. Just for giggles, I went through Home Depot, who sent out some contractors to estimate the install.

The guys wanted 10 grand for the install. (Plus, the generator costs about that much). Are they from another planet?

I have read nightmare story's about those who bought at home depot and worked with their contractors. If you do it, do not go there.

My generator hooked into my panel will do everything i need it to except for the autostart, and that's what the vortech bb is for.

I'll probably plan to pick up a used 6kw generator in the spring and have it wired to my panel for manual start up to run my tanks, pond, fridge and freezer in case of another emergency. For now I have a new 2kw that would at least keep my tanks and pond up and running until I can rent or buy a larger one. I'll probably check into a small batt backup to run 1 pump incase of late night need like flameangel88

Cham: A couple questions I have are: how far is the generator sitting from your panel and is it simply sitting outdoors or stored inside your garage/shed until needed?

Stored in my garage, I have a 10 guage 220 cable that comes out of my panel and goes about 25' so when I need it I wheel the generator out of the garage, crank it up and plug it in.

I've a battery backup for the HDTV and after reading this thread I was thinking about getting a backup for the pumps. Sure enough I was checking my email and saw a ad from newegg.com (I've ordered electronics from them for many years) for a battery backup with reasonable price of $29.99 and free shipping (UPS 3 days with promotional code: EMC1129RMSE01

Here's the item I got: Rosewill RU101 600VA 300Watts 6 Outlets UPS - Retail

flameangel88 wondering if this unit beeps when power is cut like normal UPS bat backups for computers. The once at my office beep on and off until they run dead or power is restored. Does this unit do that? Also says the battery run time is only 2- 3 minutes. I know that running a powerhead is quite a bit less than a computer, but I don't think you'll get much time out of the UPS in a poweroutage. I'm thinking you might be better off to buy a 12v car battery and 200watt inverter and hook it up when needed.

All, any thoughts on this onyone? How long will the vortech battery backup units run the pump in power out mode? I'm assuming that this battery backup unit can run any pump, not just the vortech?
