B&H Products

So it was a mistake to visit http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ because now I want to buy stuff that I shouldn't be buying ;)

Their selection is a thousand times bigger than Best Buy, which brings me to my question:

Are there any brands that I should avoid? I am seeing some brands for the first time such as Konica Minolta, Lensbaby, Phoenix, Tokina, etc, etc and I am obviously new to DSLR and not familiar with what is considered prestigious, cheap, or mediocre.

Or are all brands on B&H considered good?

Thanks.

Phoenix makes really low end lenses. Tokina is a distributor, not a manufacturer so it's hit and miss. Some of their lenses are excellent.

Lensbaby is a Lensbaby. No one else makes that product.

Ok, another question:

In general, are most lenses universal? Meaning they are compatible with all (most) DSLR bodies?

I have a Canon EOS Rebel XSi if that helps.

No. Every manufacturer uses their own lens mount.

Canon uses EF and EF-S. EF-S only works on the Rebel line and the 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D and 7D. EF works on everything Canon makes. Tamron, Tokina and Sigma sell lenses for multiple camera makers. The Canon versions are generally EF mount, meaning that they technically work on anything, but you need to read the fine print. Lenses that say "Designed for digital" are for cropped sensors only.

Oh ok, I see on B&H they have a search option for "camera compatibility" and "mount type"

Thanks

ha, ha...not directly, but I can get my hands on one pretty easily when I want too ;). Though to be totally honest I think the 5DMK2 is almost as nice. I have the original 5D (but do use the MK3 every chance I get). Still, for the price difference, as nice as the 1DsMK3 is, the 5dMk2 doesn't lack much, plus it has the HD video, and it like what $3500 less!!

Gary, the guy that I lead workshops with, shoots with one. I agree that as far as image quality, the 5DMk2 is on par. The 1DsMK3 does have some really cool advantages though. Battery life, viewfinder coverage, weather sealing, both SD and CF card slots (you can write to both cards at the same time for automatic backup or use it to double your space).

That said, it IS a $7000 camera. lol

Strangely enough the first time I held the 1DsMK3 it almost broke my wrist (jk)....it is big, and heavy. Now, I almost can't stand it when I am stuck with my 5D. I love the way the pro body feels and is handeled. Not sure if the battery grip for my 5D would make it similar or not. I can get the 1Ds easily so no need to worry about it. The grip would extend battery life too, always a boon. The dual cards is nice. There have been many times I have been shooting in the moment and it spilled over onto the second card. Never get that "dang, I was changing my card when...." moments :).

Hey Doug, what is the biggest print that guy made? How did it look? How big have you gone with your 5D? It held up well?

I used to use a battery grip but at least with the 30D, there was a slight amount of flex incurred. Since I'm on a tripod 100% of the time, it bugged me and I got rid of it.

You found a great site.
B&H is probably the best place on the interwebs to buy photography equipment.

Everything (new Canon EOS 7D + non-Standard lens, and filter) arrived as ordered!

Five Stars ***** for B&H!

lol, when I first read this I thought those 5 asterisks were edited in to replace a swear word from your excitement. Then I realized it was literally 5 stars

I know! Right??

I didn't have the words "Five Stars" when I did it the first time, and thought it would have looked like the Mod Squad got to it, so I changed it!

(I'm a Supply-chain, Contracts guy. The devil is in the details!)
