hi Everyone

After following several members' advice (and Joyce Wilkerson's book), I successfully hatched and salvaged 300-500 baby Gold-rimmed Maroon Clownfish! Hooray! I still have work to do, but this feels like a major milestone.

Last night, I turned off all my pumps right before hatching. After 15 minutes, the eggs hatched, and the babies swirled around my dim flashlight like a swarm of fruit-flies. Very cool.

Now, the baby clowns are in a separate 10G tank, eating Phyto-enriched Rotifers now. I will let everyone know how it pans out.

Here are a few pics detailing the experience.

This is a lousy picture, but I wanted to show you the parents. This is the night before the hatch. Notice the eggs to the left of the male (who appears blurry b/c he's fanning his prize).

Here's my main tank during the hatch. It's hard to see, but notice the swarm of tiny specs (almost like flies) on the top-left? Those are the baby Maroons moments after hatching.

Here are all the baby Maroon clownfish- hundreds of them! They are less than 1 day old in this 10g tank, and seem to be getting along well. They're already eating.

Lastly, here is my Greenwater/Rotifer/Clownfish Rearing Tank set-up in the garage. It's pretty crude and basic, but it's working well so far.

WOW very cool flamehawk. I can't to start breeding my own clowns. What is the filtration on the rearing tank? Just water changes huh?

hi Everyone

No filtration yet. I have a sponge filter going in my broodstock aquarium. After the remaining larvae metamorphize, I'll move the sponge to their grow-out tank. Depending on conditions, I bottom-clean almost every day, and change about 5-10% of the water.

So, my first attempt at raising the frye turned was pretty unsuccessful. I started with 200-300 larvae, and now only have about 20-30 9-day old baby gold-rimmed Maroon clowns.

After losing a great deal of larvae, I learned my problem. My salinity was way too high, 1.026. I've slowly brought it down to 1.022, and conditions seem to have stabilized.

The good news is that the parents have since laid a very large clutch of eggs. It sould hatch on Wed-Thu. I'll collect them, as well. With the lessons I learned from the first go-around, I'm confident that I can ensure a better survival rate.

I just ordered a new camera (Panasonic Z8- I'm excited!). When it arrives, I'll take new pics and chronicle the baby Maroon's development.

Sincerely,

Flamehawk
