I've been working on my portrait skills. I really enjoy taking people pictures. Since I have my granddaughter almost everyday she's become my model. Would love some imput on these 3 shots. I've been asked by friends and family to take pictures of their children. They'd pay. Not sure if I'm ready to charge. I'm thinking maybe just paper and ink, what do you think?

These 2 were in taken in the fall.

I like the last one better than the first two. The first two have an overall slightly out of focus quality. There are parts that are focused, but not the parts of the picture that I feel should be.

For instance, the first picture the white stitching on the front of the hat is in focus, and by the time you get back to her right eye (on the left side of the picture) it isnt quite tack sharp in focus anymore and has barely started to get blurry. Minor detail, but distracting nonetheless.

In the 2nd picture, her eyes arent the focus either, which has the same effect of not really drawing your eyes into hers. If anything, I'm focusing onto her shoulder or zipper on her jacket.

I like the last one. Her left eye (photo's right side) is out of focus enough that it looks like that is the intent, so it isnt annoying to look at. My only critique on that one is that I'd like to see a light in the upper right of the picture, giving her a little shadow to her right cheek, making it a little more visible. Right now, her head just kind of merges into her neck. Maybe that's the effect you were going for, if you were, then great :)

All in all, very nice. Most parents would probably be quite happy with what you've produced, especially since it's just friends and family.

Thanks so much for your CC. I still have much to learn. I like the last the best from an artistic stand point too. I will play more with focusing on the eyes great tip thanks!

Basically what Recty is saying, especially for the first 2, when it comes to portraits: Make sure the eyes, above all else, is in focus... This becomes crucial when shooting in a small f/stop such as 1.8 etc.

Thanks again Recty. I'll be working on that for sure. Athough I will admit it's not easy to focus on a toddlers eyes as they tend to move quickly. Thanks agian for all the advice!

I have a 10 month old, I know what you're going through. I've taken quite a few pictures of her and 85% of them are really nothing I want to keep around, but when you can nail the focus perfect and catch the winning expression, wow, it's amazing :)

I'd post some here but I dont want to hijack your thread ;)

Brett thank you also! My bad I missed yours. I appreciate your input

Now mine aren't professional by any means, but as she got older and older, I started taking more and more pictures with a very shallow depth of field and only the eyes in focus and I think it really started to add a lot to the photos.
