Back after 7 months

You can get s-strain from SeaHorseSource.com and they're really nice people to deal with. I feed my rots Instant Algae Nanno 3600 from Reed Mariculture and have no problems keeping my fry fed. It's alot easier than growing phyto.

was that water addition per day? I wait a couple of days. then on day 3 I add slowly a gallon to the tank. I add every day. also cleaning waits till about day 3 unless real bad. I start with 10 gallon tanks with enough water to cover eggs. I have a songe filter that I keep in the sump so its seeded. then on about day 7 or so I put it in the tank and give it real low air. slowly turning up the sponge filter as they can handle it.

Yeah that was per day. Thanks for all the help. It looks like I won't have things ready for this batch of eggs. I couldn't get live rotifers in time to ship before the weekend. Fry should hatch out on Monday or Tuesday night.

Update:
Clutch number seven were laid on Thursday. So I've been busy trying to get everything ready this time. Starter kit from e-bay arrived today, and is setup. This shipment was smaller then I thought it would be. I know ...It's a starter kit. More rotifers should arrive tomorrow from Seahorsesource.com. Two batches of s-strain rotifers and live algae starter cultures and a bottle of dead algae just in case.

These should hatch out on Wed. night.

I didn't have any luck with that starter kit on eBay...total waste of money. The rotifers I bought from SeaHorseSource.com have been going strong for 3 months now with no problems.

Mine seem to have arrived in good shape. Did your e-bay rot's crash right away ? Thank for the heads up on SeaHorseSource.com. The lady there was very helpful ! I just remember she said my rot's will ship today, which means I won't get them until Thursday. (keeping fingers crossed) LOL

Stay with SeaHorseSource.com they're the best!!!

I don't think there were many live rotifers in the bottle I got from eBay (in Georgia) to begin with. The water was very dark green. The water never got lighter or cleared (indicating there was nothing eating the phyto). I split the phyto and could never got it going.

You use the nano paste, right ? Do you have to use Prime dechlorinizer to keep the ammonia down with your rotifer cultures ?

I use Instant Algae. I've used Amquel for ammonia and really haven't noticed a difference whether I use it or not. Right now I do occasional water changes and my rotifer count is great.

OK ... I feel better now. This has been quite the project so far, still not sure I will have enough rotifer ready by Thursday. How often can you harvest rotifers ? I only have one quart of starter rotifers so far.

Update:
I placed my DIY fry snagger in my display last night just in case some fry decided to hatch. I caught five fry. Tonight is hatch, so I should have a couple hundred in my larvae container by tomorrow !

Good luck with your hatch! In my opinion, the best way to success with your hatch is to have lots of rotifers ready and plenty in reserve for the next few weeks. Start now to get your rotifer numbers up for your next hatch.

I don't see you having enough Rotifers this time. Let this one go and get your Rotifers built up for the next one.

Thanks Barbara. I'll be staying up late tonight catching fry. I have four survivors from the five I caught last night. One died immediately during the transfer from the larvae snagger to a small holding bucket. The four are swimming and doing well.
g2g lights just went out !

Clutch #7 arrived last night without a problem. Not as many as I thought, around 100. This morning all still looked well. I will get some pictures up when I get home from work tonight.

rkelman, I have more rotifers arriving today, hopefully ! I'm worried about running short on greenwater. Still not sure when FAF is going to ship my algae disks.

Today I returned home from work and rushed over to the fry holding container, only to notice the fry all pointing to the outer edge of the container instead of swiming around. They look thinner and darker, not a good sign.

How much rotifers do I put in the fry container (5 quart) ?

Play with the lighting. Sounds like outside the container is brighter and attracting them to the sides. That needs to be changed so they don't hang at the sides, possible just wrapping the container with dark paper.

For the rot concentration, basically you want enough that the larvae don't swim more than 1.5 body lengths before bumping into a rot.
