Back after 7 months

OK .. Great that's what I did today. Thanks !

Off topic : rkelman, My dad owned a bodyshop ... It was in Maui, Hawaii ! :)

John7429, Thanks. I'm all in, on this little project. Rot's are doing good. Just need more live Phyto !

That's cool agsansoo. I'd love to go to Hawaii. How are your own phyto cultures doing? You should have some ready by now.. How big are the containers / How long have they been culturing ect?
Its funny in a way. You can't get enough phyto and I can't get rid of it from my 16 day olds tank lol. I do water changes it comes back. Last night i figured I'd load the tank with Rots and nothing. The rots are gone and the tank is greener than ever. Here's a pic. Today it was much worse than in this pic.

Well the rots in a 5 quart container the larvae were in, that's crawling with rots. I harvested 1/4 of them yesterday. The other two containers are 1 quarts each. One has L-strain rots, the other has s-strain rots. The L-strain container like the 5 quart is doing very well. The s-train is reproducing a little slower, I think due to their size. The s-strain is so small, about half the size of the L-strain. Like fine dust in the greenwater. I've been culturing the L-strain (e-bay purchase) one week. The S-strain (SeaHorseSource.com) I started last Thrusday. Live Phyto is a week old and not dark green yet. I only have one liter of live phyto going. Nano disks were shipped today from FAF .... :)

Yes, I'm using the e-bay supplied fertilizer. The phyto looked darker green tonight, so I split it I guess. Is it still called a split if I double the saltwater in the same container ? Plus I added more fertilizer. I did notice the live phyto does not smell. So I'm guessing that's a good thing ?

Very cool! Looks like you're doing things right

Yes that would be a split. It sounds like your phyto is going pretty good. When you split that container again split it into 4 new batches. Inspiration? Its really a pain lol.

Tonight is hatch night ! I will be using my snagger and crossing my fingers. Rotifer are looking good. Phyto is getting darker, and will be starting a new culture tonight.

Phyto question:
Do I use one algae nano disk per 2L bottle or one disk for two 2L bottles ?

If your looking to do the drop the disk into the bottle method, I'd divide in half and go for starting two bottles.

For a quick and dirty fast start up, you can chop up the disk and drop it in your culture bottle, shake really good, and than set up your bottle at the culture station. It gets things going much faster than the typical method of adding a thing layer of culture water to the disk and floating off the top layer to a smaller culture vessel. The downside is that you end up with bits of gelatin in the culture that can lead to bacterial problems if your sanitation is bit off.

Oh, that's good to know. I'm already doing the thin layer method. Will try "drop the disk into the bottle method" on my other disk. How long can I store the algae disk in the refrigerator before I need to use it ?

IIRC the nano is good for several months or so. Just have to make sure it doesn't dehydrate.

Hi agsansoo

Do you have any more pics of your larva trap or some of how you made it. I really want to make one. It looks great

s1214215, It's easy to build.
The whole thing sits inside the tank the evening the eggs are due to hatch. When the eggs hatch after lights out the fry are drawn to a moon light taped to my tank. Theres a small pump (Rio 50) inside the coffee filter 1/4"pvc pipe that sucks anything that comes near the slot in the Tupperware. The fry are protected from the pump by the coffee filter. After about an hour all are in the holding tank, the key for me was finding the right size pump and light. Though I'm re-thinking my design after my last hatch Friday night.
