Back at it after 7 year break ,have ?

Just bought a 40 breeder .going to go sumpless this time around . Will be reusing a lot of what I had....eshopps hang on skimmer ..current 3' 6 bulb t-5 lighting...50 pounds Marco rocks and whatever powerheads I have laying around...reefkeeper controller. 1st question is do I need hang on filter or will the rock be enough? I plan on going with easy sps and a few select fish.

That sounds like plenty of rock. I see Marco rock is dry rock, so that'll take longer to cycle than live rock, but should be fine. It's nice to have a canister filter though too. You're able to use multiple media, like charcoal to clear the water, phosphate media, mechanical filtration and others to address different situations.
