Bacteria driven, heavily fed, large bioload, low nutrient system experiences

My filter sock (errrr... coffee strainer?) clogged up quite often. Usually I will clean it every other day. I'm not dosing vodka straight into my tank, but rather into my denitrator tower. Slime buildup is quite nasty when denitrator kick off, but now with close to zero nitrate, slime build up is getting less. Cleaning my socks every 4 or 5 days now

good thread, thanks for starting it, going to be a lot of great info here.

What about a large mesh filter bag to catch the particulate, may catch the bigger particles allowing smaller ones to get through without clogging up so fast?

It seems like a good idea for catching uneaten foods and w/e other nasties come down the overflow while not stripping the tank clear of all the good stuff in the water column.

I have been wanting to create one large "sock" like that that will take up the whole first chamber of the sump to see if it will last a little while and help me pull out some of the floating particulates that fill my water column. That's the only thing that I do not like about my system. There is always debre floating in large amounts. Although it's good for the tank I am trying to keep my water as clear as I can, which is very hard.

Anyone using a large sand filter to keep the water column clean?
