Bad batch of Instant Ocean? Alkalinity through the ROOF!!!

OK
I emailed Kent and this was the reply I received. Looks like Mr. Kent is a RC watcher.

David,
Thank you for your inquiry and your kind comments. Kent Marine is still wholly owned by our founder Jack Kent. Mr. Kent and I watched the long thread on the sea salt on ReefCentral and were amused at the speculation about our ownership. Aquaria owns a lot of companies but we are still independent and proud of it.

On the salt, please give us a call at 770-966-5200 ext 13 and speak with John, our head technician. He can help you out with any questions you might have. You can also send us your number and we will gladly give you a call instead.

Once again thank you and happy reefing!

Sincerely,
Ian Poole

What is he talking about? Nobody said anyone OWNED Kent, just that they share the manufacturer with IO. Companies do manufacter stuff for other companies ya know...

Ninong: I posted but do not see it so here goes again: I used to sell Oceanic before they sold and own 2 of their tanks. I have heard that the quality has gone down. That other company you are referring to is Central Pet. They own TFH books and a whole bunch of other "pet" companies. I am 99.999% sure that they recently bought Kent as well!!

I think this is the tread that started the Kent is owe by someone else.

:uzi: justletmein since you seem like you are wanting to bash me please re-read page 9. Better yet I will post the quotes here that lead up to the post about Kent being bought. If you have nothing nice to say one should not say anything. As I am sure a wise man said this once upon a time after he was bashed. tossed under a bus, or another words flamed.

Now that you mention it, I see the Aquaria, Inc. logo at the bottom of their company profile page: http://www.marineland.com/about_profile.asp
Are they publicly traded? Are they even a U.S. based company?

An interesting analogy might be the recent history of one of their tank building competitors, Oceanic Systems. Some folks complained when All-Glass bought them out because the warranty was scaled back. Some even thought they noticed a reduction in quality. Well, the warranty was really trimmed when All-Glass (including their Oceanic Systems division) was bought out by that garden supply company in Lafayette, CA.

I wasn't bashing you knucklehead...

In all those quotes only the last one mentions Kent being owned by someone other than Kent.

posted what lead to the Kent buy out post you you would understand the meaning of my post.

I except your apology ... that was an apology right?
Anyway what category would you put it under if not bashing?
The comment had no worthy insight or information or was it a nice question to the masses here?
You said there were no post saying that Kent was bought out and I posted it. It only takes one post.

:bum:

I was referring to the Kent employee who answered your email.

EDIT: This is what I was referring to, and seems to indicate more than one post.

I watched the long thread on the sea salt on ReefCentral and were amused at the speculation about our ownership.

I think you are reading more into it then they really meant.
The part about the long thread on sea salt means it is 11 pages and it's allot of reading.
maybe they should have used a comma after the word reef central.
The last part means they were laughing that someone thought the were owned by another company not meaning that there were multiple post on the subject but when they read it they were amused.
I hope this clears that up caz I am really tired as I just had a root canal done and my mouth is all numb.

AHEM,

Hello Mr. Kent!

May I have a job?

That is, supposing by chance, you have anything out here in Vancouver. Thinking to expand? I hear you. I wouldn't be willing to move unless it was a glamorous position and I could bring my cats and fish tanks.

Megeladon, ............. can you tell me who to contact at A/C. I've been spending every spare secound makeing up fresh water and dealing with the tank. Unfortunately the only thing showing any real signs of life is my algae bloom from hell. A couple corals are hanging on by a thread. I've already made arrangements with J & L to drop off my bad salt with them on Friday. You were asking me earlier when I bought the bad salt, it was on Sept 7th, the guy's at J & L confirmed it was part of the same shipment as your's. It get's even better, not only do I have the one bucket of bad salt, but I added about a third of the bad bucket to another bucket of good salt that was about half full. Brutal ............. Any info about who to raise hell with would be greatly appreciated. The cash register at my place hasn't stopped ringing yet .........

I had heard that Kent was bought by Central a few months ago. It is my understanding that this did not happen. Did not mean to get the "rumor mill" going and only mentioned that in the context of the conversation.....Aquaria owning lots of stuff, etc....Sorry if I upset Mr. Kent but have always heard he has a good sense of humor.

LOL,
Cleaning test tubes and polishing computer monitors is open:rollface:
Just kidding.

I will call Kent soon. My root canal has set me back with a little pain. If anyone has some questions needing to be asked then please post them and I will ask Kent when I call.

Thanks

What are the supposed normal dkh readings on a new batch of salt mixed with RO/DI water, with correct temp,SG etc.I realise there will be a range what is the range?

I mixed up a 5 gallon bucket of water left it a few days with a pump circulating,I then turned the pump off for a few hours. The water remained clear.I then tested alk with new Salifert kit and got a reading of 11.0dkh.Incidentally the salt used was IO.The alk in my tank never drops below 14.5 and has been consistantly high for months.

Ivan,

Natural seawater has total alkalinity of approximately 7 dKH. Most hobbyists consider it safer to maintain alkalinity in reeftanks a little higher than NSW levels. My personal preference is for a range of 10-12 dKH although I have seen some authors recommend 7-10 dKH. I don't believe that 14.5 dKH should present any problems unless you are unable to maintain your calcium levels. Calcium in NSW is approximately 400 ppm but most reefkeepers prefer to maintain calcium levels a little bit higher than that. My personal preference is for a range of 425 - 450 ppm Calcium. My own tank has been holding steady at approximately 11 dKH and approximately 450 ppm Ca.

There is a very wide range of alkalinity in the various brands of artifical saltwater mixes. There may even be a wide range between different batches of the same brand.

Arrrrgggghh... now my tang appears to have ick. I have to wait until tomorrow to buy another quarantine tank because the one I have now is being used to cure my LR.

I was worried that all that stress would cause outbreak of disease.
