Bad Snail?

Found this little bugger this morning on top my candy apples. They were and still are closed... is it good or bad?

Does not look like a typical sundial snail (sundial=bad).

Actually, it kinda does, and they do have different physical appearances. The diagnostic is to look at the foot pad, which looks like a ridged cone.

Just pulled one out of my tank, and the zoanthids are markedly better two days later.

Doesn't look at all like a sundial to me (halfway down the page http://www.wetwebmedia.com/snailidf13.htm). I had one very similar to yours years ago, would also love to know what it is so I'm gonna tag along.

Looks to be some type of whelk. Whelks are predatory, so good call on removing it.
