bak pak 2 mods

Well, it's like what I said earlier, no matter how much you mod a BakPak it'll never perform like an Urchin or Remora. Guess we all gotta go thru the learning curve...:)

well i guess from what i have seen ahmm the gallon of dry skimate i have dumped since friday that its all i got and ill make the best of it.

BTW the Remora is the same size and has the same pump maxijet 12 and with the mods its the same thing.

The way the air is inducted is different. I've owned both so I've seen the amount of air and water that gets pushed into both units, maybe the needle wheel mod works, since I haven't seen that, but comparing both units, the Urchin gets at least 2x more air mixed into the water. The Urchin/Remora operates like a downdraft skimmer instead of a venturi like the BakPak. Either way, I don't make these statements w/o having experience w/ both units.

besides...if you are getting ahmm a gallon of dry green stuff, I see no purpose of trying to improve the BakPak further..:)

Well, I can tell you this with my experience w/ the BakPak, adding a higher flow pump will not convert the dark green skimmate to brown, but adding the airstone mod wiil. If you've seen bigger skimmers function and see how many microbubbles are being mashed into that cylinder, you'd understand why it's not flow rate but rather a combination of air/water/contact time that results in quality skimmate. If anything, by adding this Penguin pump, you'd do nothing but increase the amount of microbubbles flowing out of your skimmer.

How can you tell the aqua c is injecting twice as much air? do you have an air meter? what about bubble size?

We are running a bac pac with a modified impeller....It is running on a 20g BB sps reef with very low nutrients and pulls out 1/2 cup of skimmate a day. As for micro bubbles, we get none after placing a round sponge forcing the exiting water to pass through it.

The LFS I worked at ran both a stock bac pac and a stock remora on the same tank....the bac pac out skimmed the remora. I will say the remora did make a slightly darker skimmate, but the quantity the bac pac pulled out made it the clear winner.

I also found the remora to be much more finicky to chemical/food additions. I am not sure why this is, but the foam always took longer to recover on the remora.

The bubble size created by the needlewheel we are using is much smaller than that of the aqua-c and a normal maxijet. FYI---To really make this a great skimmer, look into a gen-x NW pump. They have one rated ~250gph.

Apparently you missed there part where I stated "I have not used the needle-wheel mod on the BakPak so that may work". You do not need to use a air guage to compare a BakPak running a Rio600RV against a Urchin running a MJ1200 to see the difference in air density. I have excluded the nw mod from my statements.
You may be a guy or guys who like quantity of quality, but I do prefer quality so each their own.

lol mine is bigger lol. Oh btw green brown i didnt know there was a differance but the skimate in the pic you posted XeniaMania is the same color as mine and all i know is the bak pak 2 is the same size and has the same pump and i have to dump this thing all the time so i dont see a difference except a bakpak2 is $120 or so and a remora is $160-$230 i think $120 and some DIY is better than $230.

Flint&Eric ill have to look into that thanks.

Its like you have to have name brand and the most expensive to be cool yes i may never match the remora witch i think i have but you will never beat the next best one and so on and so on there is always something better out there all i know is i have mine that i got in a trade and im making the best that i can with what i have and if some one with a bakpak2 sees this and wants to try what i did then great if not oh well.

You do like to hear your self talk dont you i mean 874 post since feb man thats a lot. LOL. Thanks any one else?

Look into needlewheels. Try a search on here for the bio-ball needlewheel. I havent done it, but others have with good results.

I do like the mod i made when i made the water return longer i made it so the water returns to the sump under water now i cant hear the skimmer at all. I would like to stick with a pump that i would not hear i have made my overflow box wet/dry and skimmer so quite that i cant hear anything. Do you think that pump would be very loud?

I also wrapped fishing line around the impeller in a symettrical pattern to make it like a needlewheel skimmer.

It been working w/ the mod for at least a month

Just make sure it is symmetrical so there are no vibrations

How did you get it to stay on there you have any pics?

I still need to add the new pump but im working on it. Plus i think i might put the spray injector on it like the remora pro has.

You should check out a Remora in person to see how the spray injector is setup, then you'll understand why I say the things I say. It's like taking a hose and spraying water into a bucket, the injector is actually out of the water, and the force of the water entering the column is what draws in the air.

I have seen the remora in person and i have seen the blueprint for its spray injector design big deal its a venturi in the inlet pipe at the top before the pipe submerges in water again its the same size and with the mods when im done it will be the same thing. I dont care if its not a remora this is the DIY forum im doing it myself with a cheap skimmer i got in a trade and parts from lowes i dont care OK.

I mean this is not the remora is better than your skimmer forum drop it plz.
