I have a couple... sorry no pics. You can google"balanophyllia" images and there are a few decent pics... watch the sources though as many are mislabeled. I'd describe them as a smaller dendrophyllia.
A lot of these corals are incorrectly labelled in our local shops IMO.
I picked up what was sold as rhizotrochus from west australia, but looks identical to the solitary polyps in the video you posted earlier. The skeleton is only about 3cm long.
the skeleton on this specimen is 2.7 x 1.4cm and 3cm high from the pedicel at the base of the stalk. That is my jumbo Balano, my next largest are 2 and 1.8cm at their longest. True Rhizos have a much less adorned inner calyce. Here is a picture of the polyp closed, as seen from one "end" of the elongated corallite.
It's hard to tell whether that is Dendro or Balano with the polyp so extended and obscuring the skeleton. Perhaps if you share a picture with us of the polyp retracted it will be easier to tell.
Thanks coralite,
I'll take some decent retracted polyps pics tonight when not much glare on my tank glass...dis fella came off as hitchhiker on my LR....
That is the best hitchhiker i have ever seen. Congrats on that. My guess is its not dendro. I think its the Balanophillia because it looks like the skeleton is more oval shaped and the polyp is more translucent.
Here's the pics when their polyps retracted....Yea trichrome it got oval shaped skeleton & transparent to translucent yellow polyps....but so does the dendro right?....im still confused between both of them....
Because of the ovoid polyp my first inclination is towards Balanophyllia but it's probably too early to tell. My dendros stay open most of the time but the balanos are much more sensitive to light. One way to tell for sure is that if it is Balano it will never bud any new polyps. If it does then it is likely Dendrophyllia. Awesome pictures by the way.
