Balanophyllia is the Genus... there are many Species of Balanophyllia, but I'm not sure which that is...

Here's a few of my Balanos:

Calling it a "cup coral" doesn't really mean much. In a way, you could call any of the dendrophyllidae corals "cup corals." Since you say it came from TBS rock, then I think it is pretty likely Phyllangia americana. They are very nice, one of my favorites.

Awesome, great shot and very nice coral  Have you noticed that these are new babies, or the original ones that were around the base growing larger?

Great coral GoingPostal!

What's the general consensus here on Balanophyllia as far as budding new coral goes? I read that true Balanophyllia corals are solitary and do not bud like Tubastrea or Dendrophyllia. The colonies in the wild that you see together of Balanophyllia supposedly started out as solitary corals that fused together because of their close proximity to one another rather then by budding.

Anyone have any opinions on this? Cause clearly from some of these pictures budding looks like it is occuring.

These are all original babies that were on it, there is however a big lump on the backside of the main polyp that looks like either another one coming or maybe where one was chopped off and the flesh around the bottom where the babies are is also doing something strange, like puffing out.

To update, looks like my balano is indeed budding, sorry for the bad pic but the teeny tiny polyp near the back is new and the flesh all around there looks like there is a few more coming out. Will add pics as it progresses.
