Banded Trochus Snail Spawning

I'm witnessing this in my tank right now! I came downstairs this morning and found a cloudy tank and almost freaked out for a minute. I looked around and saw one of the snails releasing "smoke." Then, nearby that one I spotted another one release tiny eggs. Its pretty amazing how much they are capable of releasing. I've been seeing tons of little white things on my glass over the last couple of weeks and was wondering what they were. Now I know! I'm going to do a water change today to make sure it doesn't foul my water.

My corals seem to really like it though, they have their full feeding polyps out going crazy!

Restarted my tank almost 4 months ago and today spotted a baby Trochus snail on my overflow. I've bought 4 of them a couple months ago...!!! I found 2 more in my overflow eating. I should try to put them back in the main tank but they are hard to reach.

I've noticed the tank cloudy here or there too and was wondering what the hell has been going on. A couple years ago I had limpets spawn like crazy but I though it was because I had a ton of them. All I feed is pellets to my fancy snows...

Update: I've spotted over ten so far...! Different sizes meaning multiple spawns...I'm sure there much more. The bands are what helps spot them. Plus they are light colored being so fresh!

that's funny, mine spawned last week but it was the star snails.

I think you guys are not seeing what you think you are seeing. search Collonista snails.
Its a common reef hitchhiker snail that is confused for banded trochus snail babies.

Trochus - pyramid like and definitely not collanista snails. I can see the tentacle like hairs on the foot area too.

Yes, baby trochus. I've found a few baby banded trochus that have survived the larval stage in my tank before.

nice!!! I'm a believer now haha need to buy some snails.

Now my next question is, do you have filter socks in your sump. I wonder if they can still survive with filter sock use.

I have 1 filter sock. I've been checking them every time I pull them out. Found one on the outside of one once. Last night I counted over 12 babies that I could see. A couple of them are the size of a pencil eraser!! From sand granule to pencil eraser. I'll have to update with more pics.

Reasons they may be spawning. I had a bryopsis outbreak and raised the mg to 1800 ppm. I'm lowering now though through water changes. Lights are on for 10.5 hours (dawn dusk bulbs). Also all I have besides my clownfish pair are 6 scarlet reef hermits and some Astraea snails, there not much to eat them. I see some of the babies in my overflows on the return and overflow pipes. 10 of the 12 were in the tank though...

Update I've counted over twenty that I can see!!

There are like 3 to 4 different sizes of them. See below!

My tank has had 2 trochus spawning events that I've noticed. Five baby snails survived each event. I have a filter sock. Curiously, I've found all trochus snails in the refugium. I wait until they are nickel sized to move them into the display tank. That, or the wrasse would make a great meal of them.

My trochus population has exploded. I wonder if my LFS would be willing to buy them if this continues!

what kind of macro you have in the fuge? I find some of the algae eating inverts need some kind of macro to settle out of larval stage.

I too have found them in my fuge and pill them out if they are near the water surface. At this point I see well over 30 and again all different sizes. Many of them are now pinky size if not bigger. I do not run a refugium at this moment. The DT has like 7 or 8 small clumps of Cheatos growing and I don't see them near it. They were originally spotted in two areas and mostly within the rocks. Sump had only tiny ones...hmmm

Big boy...

What do you suggest to increase the chance of survival for these babies?
When i set up my tank, they really liked it and i got around 80 babies. Now after two years i fot few spawnings but no babies.
I just had this event today in the morning so i turned off my skimmer for some time. Maybe day or two? Good idea?

Be sure they have enough calcium to grow shell: 420 is good Likewise a DKH of 8.3 to help it stay dissolved and useable.
