Bandit Angel Coloration - Abberant?

Hi All,

I am sure most of you guys saw these guys in the classifieds a while back, Jason on here in PA had them listed. Well a very dear friend and I made the trip to go get them (12 hours each way).

Anyhow, do you think the smaller one will fill in with the rest of the black coloration or stay this way?

The smaller one is around 3" or so, been in captivity for about 6-7 months now. When Jason first got it, it had even less black then now. No pictures from an earlier time are available. She does have most of her mask between the eyes at this point.

Just curious what people think, time will tell. Makes no difference to me if she stays like this or darkens up. Both sides are identical.

Hey, it's good to see where these went! I was interested but was worried about them in my SPS dominated system. I wish I could help you with this, but have no idea.

Will be interested to hear though. Hopefully some of the angelfish experts will have some insight.
 
I have a couple clams in this tank and they are both curious about them but I am not shocked by this. I have multiple rhizos, dendros and other NPS corals and they do not even bother looking at them.

These guys will likely end up in the 520g tank down the road as I feel they will likely outgrow their current tank. Plenty of other angels in there so polyp extension will already be decreased :)
 
beautiful bandits, one of my favourites angels i am fortunate to have one myself. I would say that is unusual colouring on the black band but it may change with age.
 
Hey Scott, I saw this a couple of times years ago with bandits I kept... this was when I kept them warmer... I do not know if that played in. With my recent pair I've had for years they've stayed like the wild color form.

I saw a photo when the guy you bought them from had them and it looked like this fish had more of the band... did this progress to its state now over the past few months since collection? I'd find it hard to believe that it was collected like that by Matt...

Cool fish of course! And the Choat's too are cool... pun intended on the cool by the way... :)

I appreciate your input Copps. I do not have any pics or much info from when it was collected by Matt. The previous owner had said this little bandit had very little black when he got it from Matt and has since gotten quite a bit more black and darkened up.

I was told they were kept around I think 72-73 by the previous owner, now I keep them in the high 60s. Will be curious to see how it progresses.
 
The Bandits in question were the one's I posted for sale. These fish were not kept in warmer temps. When they resided in my display the highest my temp got was 73-74. The average temp of my tank was 72 degrees. When I transferred them back to my QT they were kept at 70-71 degrees until Scott purchased them. When I received the smaller Bandit from Matthew Ross (RGBMatt), it did not have the black bar between its eyes and the blank bands on its sides were faded and incomplete much like the pictures show. The band does appear to be darker in the pics. It grew about .5" during the time I had it. BTW, the bigger Bandit was collected by Rob Lower and grew from 2.25" to its current size in under 2 years.
 
Interesting... Jason, so did the color of this fish change from when it was collected at all? How does it compare between now and collection? Happy to see these found a good home Scott! Matt's a very good collector...

Based upon the pictures that Scott has posted, the only real difference is that black bands have become slightly darker and a little thicker than when I first received it. When Matt collected that fish, he also sent me a larger (3") Bandit. However it was too close in size to the larger one I already had. I was forced to sell that one to a friend. The two pictured above started to get along better once the third was out of the picture. The fish are definitely in good hands.
 
Thanks for chiming in Jason - obviously you know best :) You did a great job conditioning the fish I got from you!

Time will tell with how the little one does as for coloration, it is amazing reguardless! I figured I would use this thread both as a question but also as a way of keeping track of her coloration.
 
Overall doing very well with corals. The male nipped at my white rhizo for a little but has stopped that.

They do some chasing but nothing bad. I hoenstly think they want to spawn but do not have much room height to do it and the female is not warming up to the idea with the male.

I am keeping them at 67-69 degree.
