bandit angel devouring sps

I have a bandit angelfish with an incredible appetite. The fish is an absolute pig. It is destroying my sps colony after colony. It is such a cool fish. I hate to think about removing it from my reef. I am going to try feeding tank several times a day to see if this cuts dow on the nipping. Anyone keep a bandit in a sps tank?

I would really love to see a pic of it, by the way who informed you that it is reef safe because I am pretty sure it is not.

I know that with tangs, blue and purple especially, once they get underfed they eat corals. When they start there is no way to stop it even with increased feedings. Could be the same case. Sorry.

Truly bandits aren't they? Hahah, stealing your corals as an expensive lunch and making you buy more.

Angelfish aren't always reef safe(except with some individuals). I never trust angelfish in a reef tank. At first they might be alright then after a month or more they eat your corals. I'd say remove it.

I have a pair in my SPS reef.

one of them has an appetite for meaty LPS, other one not so much.

mine do nip at SPS corals, but very low damage compared to my lemon peel and other angels I have had over the years.

try feeding them more often, so they only nip corals as a snack.

Ime once you start to see this kind of behavior from a large angel it won't stop, even with increased feedings. While bandits might have a good track record in reefs, not every specimen is going to know that and conform to it :P Sorry, but if you want to keep your corals, you'll most likely need to remove the angel.

I agree they wont stop, but with more frequent feeding, you can lower the damage to the coral.

Where are you located?

Sometimes. Not the same species, but I had a majestic angel turn on my coral a few months ago (and he was very well fed). I had to feed a few clams, mussel, or oyster on the half shell daily on top of all of my other feedings in order to see even a slight difference in how much he nipped, but he was still destroying colonies in a 500g tank - just a tad slower.

I'd try taking him out and putting him in a QT tank for a couple months. Feed only meaty food and algae sheets etc. maybe he'll forget after u reintroduce

Unfortunately that is par for the course with any angel. You roll the dice whenever you place one in a reef. The larger the reef, and the more that the tank is fed, seems to lower the the chance that an angel wiping out coral.

To the OP- When I had the trio in my avatar, they killed several SPS colonies and would destroy any frags that would be put into the tank. They never touched any of my LPS. IMO a Bandit is worth some nipping and even having an SPS or two get chomped on, but then again I am more partial to fish.

Intersting thing is the fish was sold to me by a guy who had an LPS dominated tank. It was killing his LPS. I put it in my reef. I only have SPS. for months it did nothing. I then started noticing STN on colonies. One after another they would go down. I never saw the fish nipping. Whenever I stare at tank the fish never did a thing. One day I came home and caught it in action red handed.

When fish see us they recognize time for food. So they swim towards top of tank and wait for feeding. The bandit is a sneaky sun of a b_tch

Keep him get a seprate tank atleast my wife make me keep the small bandit angel after him nipping on my sps she made me get a seprate tank just for him
