Bangaii Cardinals

I bought these Bangaii's yesterday and I am not sure what sex they are. They have been getting along fine and seem to like being with each other. I am hopeful that I have a pair but it is very hard to tell. I have read that two males would have fought right away so I don't think that I have two males. Would two females fight if they were together? Help Me Out!!

Males won't necessarily fight immediately, but often will eventually. I think two females are usually worse. All that said, I've seen many tanks where two BC of the same sex do fine until they encounter one of the opposite sex. Then they have something to fight about.

You will know for sure that you have a pair if you see one of them carrying eggs. Beyond that, it's guesswork (there are a lot of references to fin length, jaw shape, etc, but that stuff doesn't work well early on).

Another thing they do once in a while is that one will nudge the belly of the other fish with his nose. Is this any kind of breeding behaviour. They seem to be quite comfortable with each other.

Not sure. It could be. I never saw that in my breeding pairs or in the fighters.

My male has a much longer fin on top. Not sure if it could be considered a differentiator or not.

My two have had babies several times, twice i was able to retrieve the babies from the main display Every now and then i find a baby surviving in my sump that must have went over when released.

Not really. That was felt to be one of the original methods to tell the sexes apart, but it ends up only working about half the time. In my last 3 pairs, the male had shorter first and second dorsal fins.

I just read on a website that the male has two dark little nubs on his underside and the female only has one. I check my two fish and that seems to be the case with them. I don't know if it is actually true but who knows.

Haven't heard that one before, and don't have any BC currently, so I can't check. Don't remember noticing it in any of them.
