banggai hatched last night

The 17 eggs I collected yesterday evening hatched overnight. Well, 13 of them did and the other 4 look like they are still viable. The yolk sac is still huge, do they need fed today? If not today, when?

I started my bbs last night but so far, no bbs have hatched. Hopefully, in a few more hours I'll have bbs.

Ok, the bbs ARE hatching. Now I am pleading with someone to help me answer the question of when to start feeding the fry. Can the fry be fed as soon as they hatch or do they need to absorb the yolk sac first? I've been searching the breeding forum all evening and can't find the answer.

You can begin feeding them when they are first born/hatched. They will "feed" off their egg sack for a few days but will need to be fed soon.

I would advise having a small amount of BBS hatching every day (or every other day) to ensure a good supply. You'll be amazed at how many BBS a baby banggai will eat!

Good luck!

I offered some bbs, but I didn't see any of them eat. Offered them again, still didn't eat. Their swimming just isn't coordinated enough, they are still all hurky-jerky and flop instead of having directed motion. I'll try again when the tank lights come back on.

All my baby banggai went some amount of time in the male's mouth. I did not realize yours did not. It will be a bit longer before they eat... not sure exactly how long but closer to when the egg sack is almost gone.

That's reassuring to hear. I was getting a bit worried b/c they still spend most of their time flopping on the bottom of the tank. They'll swim in short bursts upright, but can't sustain it for too long.

I've always let my bangaii hold the babies until he was ready to release them. The babies never had trouble swimming after that. But I also get much smaller "batches" that way. Lot's get eaten before I get to em.

May wanna try getting them to eat some freeze dried cyclopeeze as well as the BBS. My first batch was strickly on BBS and after a recommendation from another reefer I started the second batch on cyclopeeze from day one. Now it's all they eat, and love it! I am having trouble getting them off the cyclopeeze now and onto mysis and other foods.
