Banggai Matching Help

Any advice on creating a mated pair? The last two I've paired with my current baggai have gotten torn up. I assume that I keep getting males, but I'm unsure what happens if I have two females.

Usually, people start with a group of 6 or so... let a pair form, then remove the pair... and if lucky, a second pair will form. If you start with an even number of them, you will usually end up with perfect number of pairs if lucky... or if not an even sex ratio, you will get pairs and then the rest are left over. If you get too many females, they usually are peaceful and can stay with the others.

Usually you can detect a different jawline in the males. Thats been the best way for me to pick a male/female.
Cheers

Usually the jaw is wider and deeper, compared to a females

The male holds the eggs/fry. In that thread you can see how wide a males jawline can get, of course that has eggs inside.

The most common way people pair banggais is to get 6-10 and pair them as they establish domainance.

DavidM explains it pretty well in the thread when working with larger groups, or seeing groups at the stores.

I am planning on getting two for my tank after I move. I will have to keep an eye out when I go to the store so i can tell the difference between the two.

Just FYI, the jawline idea, this is striclty muscular, there is no skeletal difference from a male to female. So even a male may appear to have a smoother jawline. Not always accurate. But introducing a male to a female may intice the male to "poof" up his jaw to impress the ladies. Best to start to with a small aggregate of juvi's and weed out a pair once it forms. If they are older bangaii's, find a comfirmed male bangaii and stick one at a time in with him, you should see failry quickly weather or not he's attacking the new male you stuck in, or if he's checking out the female. Bangaii's tend to have a 1male:1female ratio with their offspring so odds are a group will yeild at least one pair. Bangaii's also can have incompatible pairs, where a male just doesn't like the female or vise versa. So if he's ignoring the new addition completely or chasing her off, may just have to keep trying.
